“You can’t even take care of Noah, and you think you’re fit to look after another child?” Hans’s voice was icy.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen. I just wasn’t paying attention.”

Eleanor seethed with resentment. “Did Nora say something to you? She never liked me, so she twists everything to make me look bad. But I swear, it was just a mistake.”

Hans loosened his tie, his tone colder still. “Eleanor, if you want Betty to have a secure future as Mrs. Cooper, then focus on taking care of Noah at home. Don’t even think about anything else.”

He was telling her she could have the title of Mrs. Cooper, but never his heart.

Eleanor bit down hard on her lip. “Hans, you’re so cruel.”

Hans gave a cold, mirthless laugh. “Eleanor, this is exactly what you asked for.”

He changed clothes and headed to his study, leaving her standing alone in the hallway.

Eleanor stood there for a long time, her hatred festering—hatred for everyone, but especially for Nora.

Before Nora came back, Hans hadn’t liked her much, but at least he wasn’t this sharp-tongued. Nora should never have come home.

Nora knew nothing of this. Later, she video-called Betty, and the two arranged to meet the next day.

Originally, Betty was supposed to return home sooner, but Nora’s busy schedule and a string of little setbacks kept pushing the date back.

The following day, Nora accompanied the elderly Mrs. Cooper and Betty to the airport.

After the flight landed, a tiny figure came running toward Nora.

“Mommy!”

Nora swept her daughter into her arms, kissing her round cheeks.

“Betty.”

Despite her young age, Betty showed no sign of shyness. She greeted the elderly Mrs. Cooper with a polite, “Great-Grandma,” then threw herself into Payne’s arms, demanding a hug.

“Betty…”

Payne held her carefully, a bright grin lighting up his face.

He’d waited so long to meet his little sister, and finally, she was here.

“Betty, I’ll always protect you,” he promised solemnly.
