“You promised this morning. You can’t go back on your words.”
Madeline didn’t argue. She spun around, grabbed the black card from the table, and shoved it at Julian’s chest. “Take it. I don’t want it.”
Julian just raised an eyebrow. He didn’t even try to catch the card, letting it fall to the floor. “Once I give something away, I don’t take it back.”
Madeline licked her lips, letting out a short, sharp laugh. “Julian, what do you think Helene would do if she found out you were here?”
“This doesn’t concern her.”
“Really?” Madeline arched an eyebrow, pulled out her phone, and started dialing Helene’s number.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, a shadow passing through them.
Helene picked up quickly, her voice icy and impatient. “Madeline, what do you want?”
“Just letting you know, Julian’s here with me. He’s acting weird. Maybe you should come pick him up.”
Helene hesitated for a second, clearly not buying it. Her voice got sharper. “Madeline, that’s not possible. You’re messing with me.”
Madeline glanced at Julian, who was stone-faced. “Want to say something to your fiancée?”
Julian’s lips curled into a cold, thin smile. “Are you really that eager to get rid of me?”
“Well, what else? Planning to stay for Christmas?”
Julian’s voice came through the phone, and Helene instantly lost it. “Julian? Julian? Why are you at Madeline’s place? Did she seduce you? Julian…”
Madeline grinned, but her eyes were flat. “Looks like your fiancée’s about to have a meltdown. Better go calm her down.” She waved at Julian, turning to pull the door shut, but he caught her wrist and pulled her back inside.
The door clicked shut behind them.
Her phone hit the floor.
Julian pressed her against the wall, trapping both her hands above her head with one of his. His other arm wrapped tight around her waist, pulling her against him.
The closeness, the way he held her, made Madeline’s heart race.
Wasn’t he supposed to love Helene more than anything? Didn’t he care if Helene was upset? Shouldn’t he be running out the door to explain everything? Why did he look like he couldn’t care less?
While Madeline was still trying to figure it out, Julian spoke, his voice low and cold. “Who sent you those flowers?”
He’d seen the huge bouquet of roses at her door when he arrived. It had annoyed him more than he wanted to admit.
Now, just thinking that Madeline might be seeing someone else made something hot and angry flare up in his chest. He didn’t even know why, but it bothered him.
Madeline smirked. “What does it matter to you?”
Her answer made Julian’s expression grow even colder.
“We were married, weren’t we? How could it not matter? Tell me. Who’s the guy?”
Madeline almost laughed. Was he really interrogating her, like she’d been caught cheating?
Sure, they hadn’t finalized the divorce, but they were basically strangers now. Besides, if he got to cozy up with Helene, she was more than allowed to have a boyfriend. That was only fair, wasn’t it?
