“Cat got your tongue?”
Madeline didn’t answer, which only made Julian more annoyed. His hand tightened around her waist.
She shot him a stubborn look, tilting her chin up. “None. Of. Your. Business.”
Julian smirked. “None of my business, huh?”
“Let me remind you, you’re the one who made me sign the divorce papers. We’re just waiting for the certificate. If I have a boyfriend now, that’s totally normal, so don’t talk to me like you caught me cheating.”
Julian’s jaw clenched. His temples pulsed.
Fine. Whatever!
He took a long breath, trying to keep his anger in check. “So you’re saying the flowers are from your boyfriend? You didn’t want me here because you were worried he’d find out? Is that it?”
Madeline wasn’t about to back down. If he wanted to think that, then so be it.
“Yeah, the flowers are from my boyfriend, and he’s coming back any minute. So, ex-husband, please get out of my house. Now. I don’t want my boyfriend to get the wrong idea.”
Julian’s frown deepened. “You two live together? How far has it gone? Did you sleep with him?”
Madeline rolled her eyes. “Even if we went to the moon together, it’d still be none of your business.”
How did this man manage to piss her off so easily? That mouth of his needed to be put in its place.
She fired back, “My boyfriend is amazing, by the way. He’s a martial arts champion. If you don’t leave, he’ll probably knock your teeth out.”
Julian had pushed her past her limit. Now she’d say anything.
“Amazing, huh? In what way?”
Julian stepped even closer. His presence was intense, filling every inch of space between them. Madeline felt her whole body tense up.
He let out a short laugh. “If he’s so amazing, I’ll wait right here and see if he can actually knock my teeth out.”
“He’ll get the wrong idea. Why would you want that?”
“I’m just making sure my ex-wife’s making good choices. Is that so wrong?”
The bright lights threw sharp shadows across his handsome face. His eyes were dark and burning with intensity.
Madeline shook, her whole body tense. At this distance, nothing escaped his gaze.
“Julian, I’m warning you, Helene is still on the phone.”
“I don’t mind.”
“You absolute—”
Julian cut her off, covering her mouth with his. The sound of rustling clothes filled the room.
Madeline barely had time to gasp. His kiss was rough and demanding, stealing her breath and swallowing any protest.
She tried to push him away, hands pressed against his chest, but he just grabbed her wrists and pinned them above her head.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the call, Helene had turned her phone up as loud as it would go, clinging to every sound.
She could hear everything, every little detail, imagining exactly what was happening between Julian and Madeline.
