“You’re not mad anymore?”
Madeline’s voice was muffled, almost tired. “I don’t have a temper like you do. It’s late, I’m heading upstairs. You should go home soon too.”
“Alright.”
“Oh, by the way, what are you doing in the Capital?”
“…Had some things to take care of.”
“Okay, well, I’m off then. Take it easy on your way back. You only get one life, so don’t drive like a maniac, okay?”
“Yeah.”
Casey got out of the car and reached out to steady her. “Let me walk you in.”
“I’m good.” Madeline tested her ankle. “It’s just a small sprain, I can walk fine. Plus, it’s raining. Go home before you get soaked.”
Casey watched as she walked away, her steps slow but steady. When she finally disappeared inside, the anger he’d tried to bury slowly sparked back to life in his eyes, impossible to put out.
He didn’t leave right away. He waited outside for a while, the dim streetlight casting a warm glow on his sharp features. Even all dressed in black, there was something wild and untamable about him.
He just stood there, hands in his pockets, and even doing nothing, he caught the attention of every girl who passed by. They couldn’t help but steal a look.
After a long moment, he pulled out a cigarette, held it between his lips, then paused. He put it away and popped a piece of candy in his mouth instead.
…
Julian came home radiating cold fury, his whole presence icy. The housekeepers shrank away from him, too scared to get too close.
He was halfway up the stairs when someone called out from the living room. “Julian.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed. His gaze swept over to the man sprawled lazily on the couch. Josh felt a chill run down his spine. “Julian, who got you all worked up?”
“Julian…” Helene was already home. She’d been waiting for him, eyes puffy from crying.
She didn’t throw a tantrum, afraid to make him angrier, so she just swallowed all her hurt and quietly blamed Madeline for it.
Julian was in no mood to talk. He glanced at Josh. “Come upstairs.”
Josh watched, curiosity getting the better of him. Who could have pissed Julian off this badly?
“So, what did you find out about that thing I asked you to check on?”
Josh poured himself a glass too, sipping it slowly.
“What, cat got your tongue?”
“Didn’t you just tell me to be quiet?”
Julian didn’t bother replying.
Josh smirked. “Turns out your wife—sorry, your ex-wife—is pretty impressive. I was digging around in Country Y. Even when some top guys from a big organization saw her photo, they called her ‘Miss Madeline’ with real respect. But no one would say anything more about her. I couldn’t get any info, and that just doesn’t happen unless someone seriously powerful is protecting her. But I did get something. Julian, guess who’s at the top of that organization?”
Julian’s eyes narrowed. “Who?”
“Casey.”
