Noah paused for a moment before finally taking a sip. It wasn’t nearly as bad as he’d expected. Actually, it tasted pretty good.
Helene’s face lit up right away. “So, how is it?”
There was no way Noah could say it tasted bad.
Just then, the doctor came in to check his temperature.
Helene hurried over, concern clear in her eyes. “Doctor, how is Noah doing?”
The doctor glanced at the thermometer. “Don’t worry. His fever’s gone down.”
His attention drifted to the bowl in Noah’s hands. “He can have more of that ginger and scallion soup. It helps bring down a fever and makes him feel a lot better.”
“Thank you, Doctor. We’ll keep that in mind.”
Helene gave a gentle smile and snuck a look at Julian, trying to read his reaction.
After the doctor’s comment, Julian’s attitude toward Helene seemed to soften a little.
Helene felt a spark of hope. She jumped on the moment and turned to Julian. “I don’t have a lot of work at hand right now. Since Noah likes the soup, I can make it for him and bring it every day.”
Julian didn’t say no, and Helene took that as a win.
She knew this was his way of forgiving her, and she smiled secretly. Julian cared about this child, and putting her energy into Noah was paying off.
Madeline cared about Noah too. A calculating look flashed in Helene’s eyes.
Julian didn’t stay long. Helene, on the other hand, acted like she was determined to look after Noah.
As soon as Julian left, Noah set his bowl aside, hardly touched. He glared at Helene, his face serious. “Dad’s gone. You don’t have to pretend anymore. And you don’t need to bring me soup in the future. I’m not going to drink it.”
The warmth dropped from Helene’s face. She gave him a cold smile. “I’m just trying to help you get better. Don’t be so rude.”
Noah stared right at her. “Not everyone is as easy to fool as you think.”
Once the topic came up, the room went quiet.
Madeline’s gaze swept across the table. She could tell what everyone was thinking.
Fortner Group was also after a spot in Grayson Enterprises’ new mall. Their perfume sales had managed to outpace Fortner Group lately, but that was their only real edge. In every other way, they were still lagging behind.
To make things harder, Julian and Helene had just announced their engagement two weeks ago. With the families joining forces, everyone figured Fortner Group already had this in the bag.
Trying to compete started to feel pointless.
Madeline’s face grew serious. This really was a tough one.
Fortner Group was strong, and with Julian and Helene’s connection, they were the obvious first pick for Grayson Enterprises.
Facing everyone’s defeated expressions, Madeline clapped her hands together. “Come on, everyone. Competing with Fortner Group isn’t going to be easy, but nothing’s set in stone yet. We still have a chance. Anything can happen.”
