Thank god Madeline had come back for her, or she’d probably be nothing but ashes by now.
People never really change. Years ago, when Julian got into that terrible car accident, she wasn’t even in the country, but she heard how the Fortner family immediately called off the engagement and how Helene left for overseas right after. Back then, she was furious with Helene. Later, though, Julian’s grandfather explained that Helene had her reasons for leaving, and she tried to see her differently.
Now, she wasn’t so sure. Helene just seemed selfish to her core.
“I’m not mad. I barely made it out alive. What right do I have to be angry?” Lucy said, looking anywhere but at Helene.
Helene’s lips twitched, barely noticeable. She knew exactly why Lucy was upset, so she rushed to explain. “Mrs. Grayson, I know you’re upset with me. I was just so scared. I froze and couldn’t help you in time. It’s all my fault. If I could, I’d take your place and be the one who got hurt.”
Did she even believe herself? Lucy didn’t bother to answer.
“Mrs. Grayson, please don’t ignore me. I was hurt too, look.” Helene lifted her long skirt, showing off the thick bandage around her calf.
Lucy glanced at her own arm in a cast, then at Helene’s bandaged leg. The sight only made her angrier.
“You’re really going to compare that little scratch to what I’m dealing with?”
Helene’s eyes filled with tears as she hurried to explain. “No, Mrs. Grayson, I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Enough. Don’t play the victim here. I’m worse off than you and I’m not even crying. What are you crying for?”
Lucy was never easy to get along with, and she never forgot a slight.
Madeline just pressed her lips together, clearly done with this whole scene. She got up from her seat. “Since there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving. You two can talk all you want.”
She walked out without looking back.
Even though Madeline was focused on her phone, she sensed something was wrong. She looked up just in time to see a red Ferrari speeding straight toward her.
She felt the fear hit her all at once.
She moved fast, stepping back several times in a row.
The Ferrari shot past, barely brushing her coat before screeching to a stop.
Madeline’s heart was still racing. She stared at the car, her expression turning ice-cold.
Raine sighed, “I can’t believe that didn’t hurt her.‘
