Brenda’s cleaver caught the light, and the two of them came to a sudden halt.
Raine’s eyes narrowed. “Brenda, have you lost your mind? I’m going into my sister’s room. Who are you to stop me? What gives you the right?”
“Sister? Please. Don’t go around calling people family when you’re not. Madeline would never have a sister as shameless as you.”
“You!” Raine started to step forward.
Brenda swung the cleaver through the air, her voice fierce. “Go ahead, take another step. See if you don’t leave here flat on your back.”
Raine and Drew both shrank back, exchanging wary glances. Neither dared to move.
That was the scene Madeline walked into when she got home. Brenda was brandishing the cleaver, Raine was hiding behind Drew, and Drew looked like he was about to explode.
Madeline pressed her lips together and marched straight over.
“Madeline.”
Brenda finally let out a breath, visibly relieved to see her.
Madeline knew exactly how stubborn these two could be. If things hadn’t gotten out of hand, Brenda and Marian would never have armed themselves. She shot both of them a grateful look.
Drew spoke up, his voice loud. “Madeline, tell your friend and this maid to get out of the way. I’m your father. I can’t believe I have to argue just to visit my own daughter. This is ridiculous.”
“Get out,” Madeline said, her tone flat and final.
Drew’s eyebrows shot up like he couldn’t believe what he’d heard. “What did you say?”
“I said, get out.” Madeline’s voice was louder now, her eyes cold and steady.
Drew’s face went dark, even darker than before. “Say that again.”
“I want both of you out of my house. Did I invite you in? Who said you could come here and boss people around?” Madeline’s expression was stormy, her voice crisp and clear.
Julian looked at him, then took a step closer to Madeline. “She doesn’t want to see you.”
“Mr. Gray—”
“Leave,” Julian said.
Drew and Raine flinched, fear flashing across their faces.
Raine bit her lip. She remembered what Helene had told her. If Julian found out Madeline had a child with another man, he’d turn on her and stop helping.
That thought gave Raine a sudden boost of confidence. She stepped forward, voice ringing out. “Mr. Grayson, we really do have something important to talk about with my sister. And it concerns you, too.”
Madeline’s heart pounded, her hands curling into fists.
Raine turned to Madeline, a mocking smile playing at her lips, ready to spill everything.
