Madeline tilted her head, a hint of warning in her eyes. “You might want to think twice before you try anything.”
One of the thugs snorted. “What, you think we’re scared of some girl? Get her!”
“Yeah, let’s see how tough you really are.”
Madeline’s lips curled into a cold smile. As the first man lunged at her, she moved faster than anyone expected. The moment his hand brushed her arm, she slammed her knee into his stomach. He hit the ground, groaning, completely winded.
She looked down at him with icy detachment. The other two froze, their bravado gone. Fear flickered across their faces as they realized Madeline was no ordinary target.
Nobody moved. The fight in them faded as Madeline stared them down, calm as ever.
Off to the side, Raine’s hands clenched into fists. “What are you waiting for? Go! Handle it!”
The two thugs exchanged glances, then forced themselves to rush at Madeline together. She sidestepped neatly, letting them stumble past her. In what felt like seconds, both men were on their knees at her feet, out of breath and out of fight.
“Please, just let us go. We won’t do it again.”
“Yeah, we promise. We’re done.”
Madeline let out a soft, almost mocking laugh. “All that tough talk just a minute ago, and this is what you’ve got? Is this what you get paid for?”
There was a sudden click behind her.
Raine, seeing her chance, scrambled for the door. But Madeline was quicker. She caught up in a couple of long strides, grabbing Raine by the arm and hauling her back inside.
Raine landed hard on the floor, her face tightening with pain.
“Didn’t I warn you?” Madeline asked quietly. “I told you not to mess with me.”
Raine’s voice shook. “Let me go, Madeline. If you do anything to me, I’ll tell Dad.”
Madeline’s smile turned sharp. “You won’t have to tell him anything. I’m sure he’ll find out soon enough.”
She stood, shot one last cold look at the group, and walked out.
Raine tried to get up, but the thugs, lost in their own haze, grabbed for her, mumbling about how hot it was.
She screamed, fighting them off. “Get away from me! Madeline, don’t you dare walk out that door! Help me, please!”
Madeline didn’t even look back. She let out a low, cold laugh, pulled the door shut behind her, and all the chaos was locked away inside.
Outside, she leaned against the wall, tugged at her collar to cool herself off, and pulled out her phone. The strange, heavy scent from the room still clung to her. It wasn’t just incense. It was laced with something stronger, something dangerous.
She dialed quickly. The line connected on the first ring.
“Hello, police? I’d like to report something. There’s illegal activity happening at the Grandview Hotel.”
She hung up, ready to leave, but before she could take a step, a strong hand caught her wrist, the grip gentle but firm, stopping her in her tracks…
