“I haven’t even asked why you’re here yet.”
Helene forced a smile, trying to look casual. “Raine got into some trouble at the hotel. She’s a friend of mine, and I was worried she’d be scared alone, so I came with her. What about you, Julian?”
“Same reason as you, for the hotel situation.”
Julian’s voice was calm, flat, almost emotionless. It sounded just like always, but Helene could feel a dangerous undercurrent, something sharp and cold behind the words.
She had a sinking feeling. Julian must know something. Otherwise, there’s no way he’d show up himself.
Helene pressed her fingernails into her palm, so hard she didn’t even notice when she broke the skin.
It wasn’t long before Drew and Kate hurried in. Kate looked totally frantic. As soon as she saw Helene, she rushed over. “Helene, what’s going on? What happened?”
“Please don’t worry. I’m still figuring things out. I honestly don’t know what happened,” Helene said, putting on her most innocent face.
“You...” Kate started, but trailed off. Others might believe Helene, but Kate knew her daughter had been handling things for her. Something had gone wrong, and there was no way Helene didn’t know more.
Helene reached out and gripped Kate’s hand, looking her straight in the eyes. “Right now everything has to be about Raine, right?”
Kate froze. She heard the message loud and clear. Helene was warning her.
Kate clenched her jaw and nodded.
Helene glanced at Julian.
He was sitting like he owned the place, arm resting on the back of the sofa, his long fingers drumming lightly against the armrest. He looked perfectly calm, elegant, like a gentleman, but his eyes were icy. There was something in them that could shatter a person with a single glance.
Helene’s heart was pounding. She had no idea how much Julian actually knew. The uncertainty was eating at her.
Raine opened her mouth to say more, but Helene quickly stepped in. “Raine, maybe we should talk about this at home.”
Helene knew exactly what Raine was about to do—accuse Madeline of setting her up.
But with Julian here, it was the worst possible time. Helene had no idea how much Julian already knew, and letting Raine go on would only make things worse, maybe even for herself. She didn’t really care what happened to Raine, but she cared a lot about her own safety.
Raine, though, wasn’t thinking straight. She was blinded by anger, desperate to make Madeline pay.
She ignored Helene completely. “Mom, Dad, it was that bitch Madeline. She took me to the hotel, locked me in a room, and sent men to... to hurt me. I... I...” She broke down, sobbing so hard she couldn’t finish.
“What did you say?” Drew’s face twisted with pain and fury. “How could sh!”
Julian’s eyes grew even colder, his voice cutting through the tension. “Is that really what happened?”
