The room went quiet for a couple of seconds. Bill tried to swallow his anger and forced himself to sound calmer. “Why? Did the Fortner Group do something wrong?”
Julian’s reply was low and icy. “No.”
Bill recognized that tone. He could guess Julian was upset about something, so he held back and pressed on. “Then what’s the reason?”
“I just don’t like you.”
That brutally honest answer left Bill completely speechless.
Julian ended the call without another word.
On the other end, Bill threw his phone onto the table. “Unbelievable!”
Courtney came down the stairs, still in her robe, frowning at him. “What on earth has you this mad first thing in the morning?”
Bill’s face was tight with frustration. He jerked his chin toward the upstairs. “Go get Helene. I want to see her right now.”
Courtney paused. Her tone turned cautious. “What happened?”
“Just get her down here.”
With no other choice, Courtney trudged back upstairs.
Helene was still half-asleep when Courtney woke her up. Before she knew it, she was dressed and being hurried down to the living room.
She glanced between her mom and dad, feeling the tension in the air. “Dad, what’s going on?”
Bill shot her a look. “You tell me. Did you take care of that thing from last night?”
Helene pressed her lips together, feeling a little nervous. Her dad almost never got angry at her like this. She tried to sound steady. “Yeah, I handled it.”
“How?”
Bill’s voice was sharp and impatient. Helene started to realize something must have gone really wrong.
Did Raine mess things up for me again?
“Dad, did something happen?”
