Helene balanced a tray of neatly sliced fruit as she made her way to the study, only to catch snippets of Julian and Miles talking inside.
A paternity test!
Her fingers tightened around the tray. Julian wanted a paternity test with Noah? Did he suspect something? Or had someone told him something that made him suddenly want to check?
A housekeeper passed by, and Helene quickly caught her arm. “Was someone here just now?”
“Yes, Ms. Monroe just left.”
Helene’s jaw clenched. Of course, it was her. The first thing Madeline did after coming back was show up at the Grayson house. Was she really that desperate? Still trying to get Julian’s attention?
She could always count on Madeline to stir up trouble.
Helene pressed her lips together, handed the fruit to the housekeeper, and hurried out, determined to catch up.
Inside the study, Julian finished giving Miles instructions, then reached for his phone and made a call. The other end picked up almost instantly. “Julian, what a surprise. What’s going on?”
Julian kept his voice calm and even. “I need you to look someone up for me.”
“Who?”
“Madeline.”
There was a pause, then a teasing laugh. “Didn’t she die? Five years ago, right? Still thinking about your dead ex-wife?”
Julian stood by the window, his eyes cold as he watched the world outside. “She’s not dead. She’s been living in Country Y for the past five years.”
The line was quiet for a moment. Then, his friend’s voice came back, light but thoughtful. “Country Y, huh? That place is a mess. If you’re reaching out to me about her, she’s definitely not ordinary.”
“You know the connections there. If you hear anything, let me know.”
“Will do. I’m on it.”
“Thanks.”
Julian ended the call and tossed his phone aside, his eyes dark and impossible to read.
Helene’s expression cracked, her anger twisting her features.
Madeline let out a cold laugh and walked away, not bothering to look back.
Helene was practically fuming. She rushed outside, just in time to see Madeline getting into a car and driving off.
Her eyes narrowed.
Madeline, you better watch yourself!
Helene pulled out her phone, quickly reciting Madeline’s license plate number. “Find out where this car is going. Now. I want to know right away.”
She would not let Madeline get away with this.
Never!
Five years ago, she’d been too soft and hadn’t finished the job. This time, she wouldn’t make the same mistake. If Madeline tried to go after Julian again, Helene would make sure she disappeared for good.
