No wonder he was so determined to break off the engagement. Was she really nothing compared to Madeline? Had he actually fallen for Madeline? What did Madeline have that made him care so much?
Helene clenched her teeth, the pain in her chest almost unbearable. Even so, this felt like a turning point. She put on her most wounded look and kept going. “Mrs. Grayson was ready to agree, but then Ms. Monroe suddenly raised her price. She wanted two billion. Mrs. Grayson said she was being greedy. I tried to talk some sense into her too, but Ms. Monroe got mad and threw a cup at my hand.”
Julian looked up at her, his eyes dark and sharp, making Helene’s hand tremble.
“Madeline wanted two billion?”
Helene nodded, eyes wide and earnest, hoping to plant a seed of doubt. If Julian thought Madeline was greedy, maybe he’d start to hate her.
Julian let out a short, sarcastic laugh.
Helene couldn’t tell what the laugh meant, but she felt a chill crawl up her spine. She had no idea Julian could see right through her. Maybe the first part was true, since Madeline really did seem desperate to divorce him. But Madeline wasn’t greedy. She had been willing to give up a billion dollars just to get away from him. She would never try to squeeze more out of the deal.
“Julian, are you okay?” Helene asked, nervous now.
Julian raised an eyebrow. “I’m fine.”
Helene stared at his face, searching for any clue as to what he was thinking, but his expression was impossible to read.
“You can leave now,” Julian said, his voice cold.
Helene’s face crumpled with confusion. “Did I say something wrong?”
“No. I’m busy.”
He was already standing up, ready to end the conversation. Helene rushed forward, grabbing his hand before she could stop herself.
“Julian, did I say something to make you angry?”
Julian’s brow furrowed. “Go home, Helene.”
When she heard his voice soften just a little, Helene tried again, sniffling. “Julian, there’s a party tomorrow night. Would you come with me? All my friends are bringing dates and I don’t want to go alone. I really want you by my side, please?”
She looked up at him with watery, hopeful eyes. “Josh and Elliott will be there, and a bunch of our old friends. They’d love to see you, Julian…”
Julian kept his face tense, but he gave a small nod.
“Really? Thank you, Julian.” Helene quickly wiped her tears, forcing a smile.
Julian didn’t say another word. He just turned around and walked out of the office.
Helene’s face lit up with happiness. Maybe Julian didn’t hate her after all. He usually avoided parties, but he was willing to go with her. Now all she had to do was figure out how to get him to the courthouse and make this official.
