“What are you doing here?” Helene’s face lit up the moment Julian walked in. She hadn’t expected to see him so soon. He was supposed to be in a meeting, and she honestly thought she’d be waiting forever. But he came straight to her, leaving a whole conference room of people behind. For a second, it felt like everything was perfect.
That feeling vanished almost instantly. Julian stared at her, and it was obvious he thought she was someone else. Helene felt her smile freeze, her face going stiff. “It’s me, Julian. Who did you think it was?”
Julian frowned, his eyes narrowing. Miles, who had followed Julian in, stopped in the doorway, looking just as confused. “Ms. Fortner?” he blurted out.
Julian shot Miles a cold look that made Miles shiver. How had Madeline turned into Helene? Miles glanced at the secretary behind him, silently blaming her. “Didn’t you say Mrs. Grayson was here? How did it turn out to be Helene?”
The secretary looked terrified, practically shrinking under the weight of Julian’s glare. “I meant Helene when I said Mrs. Grayson,” she stammered.
Everyone had started calling Helene “Mrs. Grayson” since she visited Julian so often, and now that they’d announced their engagement, it just stuck. Helene never corrected anyone. Sometimes, when she was happy, she even handed out little gifts. It felt natural for everyone to call her that now.
The secretary looked helpless. Miles looked like he was about to cry, wishing he could just disappear. The way Julian was looking at him, it was like he was about to lose his head.
“Julian?” Helene’s hands twisted together in her lap. She could feel the embarrassment and hurt bubbling up inside her. So Julian only rushed over because he thought Madeline was here? Was Madeline really that important to him?
Julian sat down on the sofa, his face closed off and cold. “What do you want?” His tone was sharp.
Helene bit her lip, suddenly unsure. She’d meant to talk business, but now she didn’t dare bring it up. “It’s nothing, really,” she said, forcing a smile. “I just... missed you. I wanted to see you.”
Julian started to stand up, ready to leave. Helene panicked and grabbed for anything to keep him there. “Julian, would you have some coffee with me? I just made it, especially for you.”
She looked up at him, her eyes pleading. Julian hesitated, frowning, but he didn’t leave. Maybe he just felt sorry for her. Helene hurried to pass it to him with both hands. “You always said my coffee smelled the best. Try it.”
Julian took the cup and drank it all down at once, not even pretending to enjoy it. He looked like he couldn’t wait to get out of there.
