“Have you been binge-watching too many dramas lately? A hidden mastermind and all that?” Brenda smirked, shaking her head. “Honestly, I hope I’m just being paranoid.”
Grandma Monroe was the only one in that family Madeline still cared about. She really didn’t want to believe Grandma could be like the rest of them.
“But listen, Madeline, whether you trust Grandma Monroe or not, don’t go telling her everything. Especially not about the baby. It never hurts to be extra careful.”
“I know, I get it.” Madeline had no intention of sharing those secrets with anyone from the Monroe side anyway. She always understood that kindness had its limits, and people would always put themselves first.
“Oh, and by the way, there’s a gala tomorrow night. Want to come with me? Now that you’re back and running the company, you really need to network. It’s important for people to get to know you.”
“Yeah, sounds good.”
“Awesome. How about we swing by and pick out some dresses now?”
Madeline checked the time on her watch. She had a million things to do today. She was supposed to pick up Noah at four-thirty, go to the Graysons at eight for Julian’s treatment, and work was piling up like crazy.
She let out a sigh, propping her head in her hands. “Let’s make it quick, okay? I’ve got so much to do. Poor Noah, I’ll have to ask Marian to pick him up.”
“We’ll be super fast, promise.” Brenda took the next turn toward the mall.
Inside, they headed straight for the designer gown section. Brenda knew Madeline was in a rush, so she didn’t waste any time. Her sharp eye scanned the racks, and she quickly picked out something perfect for herself.
Madeline chose a champagne-colored, off-the-shoulder gown. Both of them slipped into their dresses at the same time.
They really did have great taste. The styles fit them perfectly, and with their looks and figures, even simple gowns turned heads.
They checked themselves out in the mirror, and the salesgirl behind them looked practically starstruck. “You two are stunning. These gowns look amazing on you.”
Madeline and Brenda caught each other’s eye and grinned. Decision made. “We’ll take them.”
Brenda noticed Raine’s glare and scoffed. “Why are you staring at Madeline like that? Never seen a pretty girl before?”
Madeline just glanced at Raine and gave her a calm, almost teasing smile. “You seem to be in a good mood.”
She knew exactly why Raine hated her. Not only had her plan failed, she’d ended up suffering for it herself. Of course she was bitter.
What really surprised Madeline, though, was that Raine was actually out shopping with Helene today, after everything that went down last night.
Raine forced a cold smile. “Thanks to you, I’m just fantastic.”
Madeline arched a brow. “Yeah, I can tell.”
Raine dug her nails so hard into her palm she nearly drew blood. Madeline’s voice was laced with mocking sweetness. She couldn’t believe this bitch still dared to laugh at her.
