Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 256

“You just wait. I’ll make you pay for what happened last night.”

Madeline just smiled, calm and unbothered. “I’ll be waiting.”

Then she and Brenda turned and walked away.

Helene grabbed Raine’s arm. “Enough already. Stop making a scene. There’s plenty of time. You’re coming with me to the party tomorrow night.”

“Fine, I get it.” Raine knew Helene only wanted her there to use her. The thought left her feeling hollow. She didn’t bother with her usual flattery or attempts to please Helene, which obviously irritated Helene. Helene had always loved being the center of Raine’s attention and now she was getting the cold shoulder.

She knew exactly why Raine was acting this way. It was all because of last night. Raine felt hurt, and she wasn’t hiding it.

“You’re still hung up about last night, aren’t you? Upset that I wouldn’t let you drag Madeline into it?” Helene folded her arms, her gaze icy as she stared Raine down.

Raine pressed her lips together, refusing to say anything.

“Idiot.”

“You—” Raine was about to snap, but she remembered what Kate had said and forced herself to swallow her anger.

“Did you really think Julian would come all the way to the police station without knowing exactly what happened? Did you think he’d just believe you if you tried to trash Madeline? If you kept running your mouth, you’d have been digging your own grave.” Helene’s voice was sharp. “And you act like you’re the only victim here. Because of what happened, Julian just canceled a major deal with Fortner Group. You think that didn’t hit me hard? So stop with the attitude. If you hadn’t messed up, none of this would’ve happened. Instead of wasting your time blaming everyone, maybe focus on how to handle Madeline. And don’t forget who got you into this mess in the first place.”

Helene shot her a glare, then turned on her heel and marched into the store.
