Helene lifted her skirt and hurried to catch up, determined not to let Madeline outpace her. She sidled up and gave a mocking little laugh. “What a coincidence, Ms. Monroe. You’re here for the party too?”
Raine, standing beside her, rolled her eyes and shot a look full of attitude. “Madeline, who invited you? What makes you think you belong here?”
Madeline let out a sigh and shot back, “How is this your business?”
Seriously, why did these two have to start something every single time they saw her? Did they have nothing better to do?
She really didn’t feel like getting into it tonight, so she picked up her pace, hoping to leave them behind.
Raine wasn’t ready to let it go. “What’s that supposed to mean?” She started after Madeline, but Helene sent her a glare, silently telling her to back off.
“You never win when you go after her. Do you want another beatdown? Haven’t you had enough?” Helene’s voice was sharp and dismissive.
Raine’s bravado fizzled out fast. “I…” She trailed off, remembering just how tough Madeline could be. Honestly, neither of them could handle her when things got messy.
All they could do now was watch Madeline walk away.
Helene shot Raine another withering glance. “Control yourself. This isn’t your house. Don’t embarrass me in public.”
Raine bit her lip, nodding even though her eyes still burned with resentment.
Helene straightened up, smoothed her skirt, and walked into the party, all elegance and poise.
Madeline reached the entrance, and a hotel staff member greeted her. “Miss, may I see your invitation, please?”
She nodded, reaching into her clutch. She rummaged through it, but after a moment her face tightened. Oh no.
Brenda had her invitation.
“Just a second,” Madeline said, moving off to the side to call Brenda. Before she could dial, Helene’s voice rang out behind her.
Raine scoffed. “You’re just embarrassing yourself. Pretending you belong here when you clearly don’t. What are you waiting for?” she said to the staff. “She’s obviously trying to sneak in. Shouldn’t someone like that be kicked out?”
The hotel staff hesitated, clearly unsure.
Helene gave a polite little smile, but her eyes sparkled with amusement. “That’s enough, Raine. Maybe Ms. Monroe really did just forget. Let’s go inside.”
Their voices were anything but quiet, and people walking by started to stare.
“Ms. Fortner, is something wrong?” someone asked as they slowed down nearby.
Helene flashed a sweet smile. “Oh, it’s nothing. Ms. Monroe here just forgot her invitation, so she can’t go in. I know her, so I stopped to check if she needed help.”
Raine snorted. “She doesn’t have one. She’s just trying to sneak in. ‘Forgot it’ is a pretty weak excuse.”
A few ladies nearby overheard, and their faces shifted as they looked at Madeline. Nobody liked a party crasher. The judgment in the air was impossible to miss.
