Julian just made a low sound of acknowledgment, then got out of the car and walked straight over.
Madeline stood on the steps, watching him approach. His face was completely blank. His eyes were so cold, it was almost scary.
She stared at Julian, suddenly feeling like she’d seen this all before.
She remembered the day they registered their marriage. He’d looked exactly like this—moody, cold, and obviously irritated.
He must have hated her back then.
But at the time, Madeline had been so wrapped up in loving him, she never even noticed.
Looking back now, she realized they’d never stood a chance.
Madeline lowered her eyes just a little. “Let’s go.”
Without hesitation, she walked inside. Julian felt his irritation spike. “You don’t want to think about this a little more?”
“Think about what?” Madeline gave a quiet smile. “Didn’t we already decide five years ago?”
Ever since Julian had forced those abortion pills down her throat, she’d already made up her mind.
…
They walked out of the civil affairs office, having just submitted their divorce application. After one month, they’d be officially divorced.
Madeline glanced over at Julian. His face hadn’t softened at all.
She had no idea what he was so upset about.
This was what he wanted, right? Now he could be done with her for good, marry the woman he really loved, and never have to think about Madeline again. He should be happy.
She turned her gaze away. “I’m heading off. By the way, your mom mentioned that stopping the treatment last night. Are we going to stop or not?”
“Continue.”
“Alright.” Madeline nodded, then walked away.
As he watched her leave, Julian felt a sharp throbbing at his temples, a headache coming on strong.
Weird. He hadn’t had one of these in ages.
…
When Madeline got back to the office, Brenda was just coming out of her office.
Brenda, about to call her, spotted Madeline walking over.
“Oh, there you are. Why are you so late today?”
“I had to go to the civil affairs office,” Madeline replied.
Brenda almost blurted something out but caught herself, glanced around, and quickly pulled Madeline into her office. “Wait, did you and Julian get divorced?”
“Yeah, it’s done. Should’ve happened a long time ago.” Madeline’s tone was casual, like it didn’t matter at all.
Brenda stared at her for a couple seconds, then nodded. “Good. It’s for the best. Time to find someone new. I still think Casey would be great for you. He’s always so nice to you, don’t you think?”
“Casey’s nice, sure, but he’s out of my league. Anyway, I’m not looking. Oliver and Noah are all I need right now.”
Helene stepped out of her car in a white mermaid gown that hugged her curves. A silver chain belt showed off her tiny waist, and the V-neckline revealed her delicate collarbones. Her waves were perfectly styled, falling over her shoulders.
Her face, always pretty, looked especially sweet tonight, but her smile was obviously forced.
She’d planned to walk in with Julian, soak up everyone’s envy, and show the world he was hers. She wanted to send a clear message to any woman thinking of approaching him.
But Julian hadn’t even waited for her. She was left to arrive with Raine instead.
She was in no mood to be happy.
Raine was also dressed up, wearing a pink strapless gown that showed off her curves, her makeup flawless. She’d clearly put in a lot of effort.
But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t outshine Helene. Helene tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and said coolly, “Let’s go in.”
Just then, a black car pulled up. Madeline stepped out, dressed in a simple, elegant silver gown.
The off-the-shoulder neckline highlighted her graceful shoulders and neck.
She was tall and slender, the dress perfectly outlining her figure. The fabric flowed with every step she took.
But her face was the real showstopper. Madeline was stunning, the kind of beauty that turned heads at first glance and held up to every second look.
She lifted her skirt and walked up the steps. Brenda was running late, so Madeline had come alone.
She could feel someone watching her. Madeline looked up and locked eyes with Helene.
Helene stared at Madeline’s flawless features and that cool, distant aura. She couldn’t help but feel overshadowed, her teeth clenching in frustration.
Madeline barely glanced at her before heading inside the ballroom, her expression calm and unbothered.
