Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 265

Helene kept her eyes glued to Julian, watching for even the smallest sign that he cared about Madeline. The tension in the room was thick, her nerves strung tight as a wire.

“Madeline can’t get in? I’ll go get her.” Brady shot to his feet without thinking.

Josh coughed and yanked Brady back down. “Seriously, man? Why do you always have to butt in?”

“I’m not—”

Josh grabbed a pastry and stuffed it into Brady’s mouth. “Here, eat. You’re obviously starving.”

Brady blinked, confused by Josh’s frantic side-eye. He chewed mechanically, unsure what was going on.

Josh leaned over and looked at Julian. “Hey Julian, why don’t you go get Madeline? She probably just forgot her invitation. Poor thing, stuck outside.”

With a few words, Josh took Helene’s story about Madeline having no invitation and turned it into a simple mistake. Suddenly, Madeline wasn’t excluded, just forgetful.

Julian’s brow twitched. Why would it matter to him if Madeline couldn’t get in? They were getting divorced. She was making it clear she wanted nothing to do with him. Why should he care?

“What’s that got to do with me?” Julian’s voice was cold, his face unreadable.

Josh hesitated, caught off guard. Where was this coming from?

Helene’s smile grew, her relief impossible to hide. Maybe Julian didn’t care about Madeline after all. Maybe she had been worrying for nothing.

Someone else, oblivious to the tension, piped up. “Who’s Ms. Monroe, anyway?”

Helene answered with a sweet smile. “Madeline, the daughter of the Monroe family.”

“Madeline?” A few people exchanged uncertain glances. Wasn’t that Julian’s wife who supposedly died?

“You all look so shocked,” Helene said, letting a touch of bitterness seep into her words. “Ms. Monroe never really died. She faked it and disappeared.”
