Madeline glanced at her phone. It was already late. “Sorry for making you wait so long. Let’s go eat. My treat.”
“You said it. I booked us a table at Golden Spoon. I’m definitely not holding back, so come on, let’s go.”
…
In the study.
Helene knocked twice, then stepped in. “Julian.” She approached, her smile soft and gentle, each step perfectly poised.
Julian didn’t look up right away. His head ached, and the heavy scent of Helene’s perfume made him frown.
Helene moved closer anyway. “Julian, I’m having dinner with Raine at Golden Spoon later. Can you come pick me up when we’re done?”
He glanced at his watch, didn’t bother to argue. “Alright.”
Helene’s smile grew even brighter, and for a moment, something calculating flickered in her eyes. “Thank you, Julian.”
…
Golden Spoon was one of the city’s most famous restaurants, known for its amazing dishes and elegant charm. It was the kind of place the elite loved, which meant getting a table was almost impossible. Brenda had managed to snag a reservation days ago.
She led Madeline to their table and started browsing the menu. “Honestly, it’s so hard to get in here. Since we finally made it, I’m going all out tonight.”
Madeline grinned. “Order whatever you want. It’s my treat.”
Brenda didn’t hold back. She picked out everything she’d been craving.
The food arrived in no time. Madeline barely touched hers, still distracted by thoughts about that child. She just couldn’t shake it off. Brenda, though, acted like she hadn’t eaten all day and dove right in, savoring every bite.
Madeline’s phone buzzed. She answered.
Casey’s voice came through, low and magnetic. “Did you take care of it?”
“Yeah, everything’s sorted.”
“So the person you called the cops on was Julian?”
Madeline’s eyes flicked over. She turned, eyebrow raised.
Helene stood there, smiling like they were old friends.
Just half an hour ago, she’d been saying the nastiest things. Now, with people around, she could pretend to be sweet as sugar. Honestly, she should’ve been an actress.
Next to her was another girl, Raine.
Madeline’s half-sister.
The two of them had always been thick as thieves. Seeing them together now didn’t surprise Madeline at all.
“Coincidence? I don’t think so,” Madeline replied, her smile icy.
It was obvious Helene had come here on purpose.
“Madeline?” Raine called out in a syrupy voice. “Helene said you were back. I didn’t believe it at first, but here you are.”
