Helene looked like she was about to pass out. Julian’s face tightened with concern as he scooped her up in his arms. “Show me the way,” he said.
He carried Helene behind the hotel manager, heading straight for a room.
Madeline, meanwhile, forced herself to stand tall. She refused to let Julian see her fall apart.
As the crowd slowly melted away, the strength she’d been holding on to finally slipped. Her legs buckled and she reached for the wall, but before she could steady herself, a hand caught her.
Madeline looked up and found herself staring into Casey’s dark, unreadable eyes.
He was drenched too. For a second, gratitude flickered through her. She knew he’d jumped in after her.
“Thank you.”
Casey’s face didn’t change at all. His voice was cold enough to make her shiver. “Why are you pushing yourself so hard?”
Madeline gave a tired, lopsided smile. “Who am I supposed to be weak for?”
Only people who are loved have the luxury of falling apart. If no one cares, what’s the point of showing weakness?
“Let’s go back,” she whispered. She tried to take a step, but the moment the words left her mouth, everything went black. She collapsed to the side.
Casey’s breath caught. Instinct kicked in and he caught her before she hit the ground. “Madeline? Madeline?”
He stared down at her, his brow twisted in frustration. Even now, barely conscious, she’d managed to hold herself together in front of everyone. His anger and worry tangled together as he lifted her up and moved quickly inside, barking over his shoulder, “Get a doctor. Now!”
“Madeline, if anything happens to you, I’m going to kill Julian and send him to hell with you. Do you hear me?”
The elevator dinged open.
