“Mom, I get it. I know exactly what to do now.” Helene’s eyes sparkled with something dark and sharp. A cold smile tugged at her lips. Madeline was out in the open now, while she could work from the shadows. That made everything easier.
Courtney gave her a reminder. “Don’t do it yourself. Find someone else to handle it. If anything goes wrong, it won’t come back to you.”
Helene grinned, feeling pretty pleased with herself. “That’s not even hard. Raine’s such an idiot, she’s perfect for this.”
…
At Madeline’s place, the silence stretched between them. No one said a word.
Julian glanced around the room, his look as cool as ever. “Aren’t you going to say anything?”
Madeline glanced at him. “Do you want something to drink? I only have water.”
He didn’t answer right away.
After a quiet pause, Julian spoke again. “Let’s talk about what happened back then.”
Madeline’s hand froze for a second as she poured water. Julian watched her, not missing a thing.
She looked down and took a sip of water.
Julian lifted an eyebrow. “Wasn’t that for me?”
Madeline blinked as if realizing her slip. She poured another glass for Julian and set it in front of him. Her voice was calm and even. “There’s really nothing to talk about.”
“It must be tough, raising the kids on your own,” Julian said suddenly.
Since last night, both of them had carefully avoided talking about the children. But honestly, they both knew the truth.
Madeline pressed her lips together. “It’s not that hard. They just doesn’t have a dad. I’m doing fine on my own. If I had the choice, I’d want both my kids with me.” Her meaning was clear. She wanted Noah back.
Julian’s eyes grew darker.
