Julian didn’t just spend the whole morning at Madeline’s checkup. Now he was actually driving her home himself. Helene could feel jealousy pulsing in her veins. What did Madeline do to deserve this? Seriously, what was so special about her?
“Bitch,” Helene muttered under her breath.
She forced herself to stay put. Julian was already pissed at her. If she marched over there and he found out she’d been following them, he’d lose it for sure. She had no choice but to leave, but the bitterness stuck with her like a bad taste.
As she pulled onto the main road, something caught her eye. She narrowed her gaze and spotted Marian on the curb, waving for a taxi, a little kid by her side. Helene recognized Marian right away. She was Madeline’s nanny, no question. The kid with her looked about five, even though Helene couldn’t see his face too clearly.
If Marian was Madeline’s nanny, then the kid had to be Madeline’s child.
A wicked grin spread across Helene’s face. “So you really do have a kid, Madeline. And now I’ve caught you.”
The excitement fizzled fast as a new thought hit her. A five year old? That would mean… The child from back then wasn’t dead after all?
No way. That couldn’t be!
Helene’s heart dropped. She pulled her car closer, staring at the child, desperate for a better look. The second she saw his face, her stomach twisted. He looked just like Noah.
So that kid really survived?
Right then, Marian called out, “Noah, careful.”
Noah? Helene’s eyes narrowed even more. That was Noah? How could that be?
She grabbed her phone and dialed the Grayson family’s housekeeper. “Is Noah at home today?”
“Ms. Fortner, are you looking for Noah? He’s at home.”
He’s home? That didn’t make sense.
“Are you sure?” Helene pressed.
Courtney was silent for a long moment. When she finally spoke, her voice was cool and steady. “Don’t panic, Helene. Didn’t I tell you before? If you want to deal with Madeline, you have to find her weakness.”
Helene nodded, even though her mother couldn’t see her.
“Well, now you’ve found it. Her children are her weakness. All you have to do is go after them, and you’ll break her down completely.”
“Mom, what do you mean?”
“Think about it. What happens to a mother if she loses the child she loves most?”
“She’d be destroyed,” Helene breathed, her eyes lighting up as the idea sank in.
“Exactly. If she’s broken with grief, do you really think she’ll have the strength to fight you for Julian?”
Helene sucked in a shaky breath. That was it. That was what Madeline had been so desperate to hide all this time. Now that Helene knew the truth, she finally held all the cards. Madeline’s biggest secret, her greatest weakness, was right there in plain sight.
