They caught each other's eye and shared a sly smile, something sharp and secret flickering between them.
“I’m done waiting. I need to see what’s happening at the Grayson place right now. You stay here,” Helene said, grabbing her purse and heading out.
At the Grayson estate, every single person was out searching for Noah.
Oliver came inside, spotting Madeline right away. He lit up and rushed over. “Mommy, what are you all doing?”
Madeline’s heart jumped, but she quickly pulled herself together. “Oliver?”
“Yes, Mommy. Did something happen? Who are you looking for?”
Madeline looked at him, her eyes welling up before she could stop it. Her voice went soft. “It’s nothing, really, nothing.”
She wasn’t sure if she was trying to comfort him or herself.
“Oliver, can you go somewhere safe with more people around?”
He looked around at all the rushing adults and got the sense that something big was going on. He knew he couldn’t help and didn’t want to cause more trouble, so he quietly went to sit in the living room.
Lucy watched everyone tearing through the house, all looking for a kid who might not even be there. Her temples pounded with frustration.
“Grandma,” Oliver greeted her politely.
Lucy shot him an irritated glance, but she still responded with a grumble.
Helene stepped into the chaos of the Grayson house, a smirk playing on her lips. She walked over to Lucy, putting on a look of surprise. “Mrs. Grayson, I just saw everyone outside searching for something. What’s going on?”
Helene almost couldn’t hide her smile, but she quickly smoothed it away. She sighed and gently patted Lucy’s back. “Mrs. Grayson, calm down. It’s not worth it over her.”
Lucy took a deep breath, rubbing her forehead. She glanced at Helene. “So, why did you come by all of a sudden?”
Helene gave her a warm smile. “I just thought, Julian was always so busy, so you must get lonely at home. It’s still early, and I wanted to come keep you company for a bit.”
Lucy nodded. “That’s very thoughtful of you.”
Helene peeked at the busy crowd and put on a worried look. “Should I help them search?”
Lucy caught her arm. “Forget it. Let them handle it. Just stay here and have some tea with me. I’m so angry I could scream.”
Helene smiled sweetly, then stood up and started massaging Lucy’s shoulders with gentle hands. “Alright. Please try to calm down. It’s not worth making yourself sick over this.”
