Lucy smiled, feeling a little lighter. “You really do know how to cheer me up. Help me into my wheelchair and take me upstairs, will you?”
“Of course, Mrs. Grayson.”
Helene just smiled to herself. There was no way they’d find that kid anytime soon. And even if they did, it would probably be too late. The Grayson estate would be the place where Madeline’s child died. Even if she came to understand that Julian wasn’t behind it, that pain would never really leave her heart.
There would always be that loss between Madeline and Julian, something neither of them could ever get past. They’d never be able to go back to how things were.
...
The staff had searched every inch of the Grayson estate again. Miles walked over to Julian, looking frustrated. “Sir, we didn’t want him.”
Julian rubbed the bridge of his nose. “You checked everywhere?”
After Madeline insisted the child was still here, he’d had every exit locked down. No one could have left. If Madeline was so sure, and they still couldn’t find him, it just didn’t make sense. The kid couldn’t have just vanished.
Miles hesitated. “Everywhere except for the room Mrs. Grayson doesn’t allow anyone to enter. Everywhere else is clear.”
Julian’s brows knit together as he looked over at Madeline. She looked pale, worry written all over her face.
He hesitated, then said, “Check it.”
Miles looked surprised. “Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Miles still seemed unsure, but nodded. “Alright.”
Just as he turned to leave, Oliver came running down the stairs, breathless. “Daddy, Mommy!”
Madeline dropped to her knee right away, her voice soft but urgent. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Julian moved quickly, steadying her with a hand on her back.
Madeline sucked in a shaky breath, pain etched across her face.
Julian’s eyes widened as he finally realized what was wrong. His brow furrowed and he pulled her gently in front of him.
Madeline glared. “What are you doing?”
Julian ignored her protests and pulled down her jacket, exposing her shirt stained with blood.
Underneath the torn fabric, he saw a wound that had only been given a quick, makeshift treatment. The skin around it was an angry red. Julian’s eyes hardened, his voice dropping into a low, furious growl. “Madeline, are you trying to get yourself killed?”
Madeline yanked her jacket back up. “I’m fine.”
Julian’s glare only deepened. He held her firmly, careful not to touch her injury, but there was nothing gentle in his grip. “Don’t give me that. Get a doctor here. Now!”
