Madeline pulled back, refusing to let Julian drag her away. “I told you, I’m fine.”
“You’re hurt.”
She flinched, her brow twitching. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.”
“That’s crap.”
Julian’s eyes were dark and stormy, fixed on her face, which had turned pale from the pain.
Madeline sucked in a breath, forcing herself to ignore the ache in her body. “What matters right now is finding Noah. I’ll be okay.”
He glared at her. “Seriously? Is that kid really more important to you than your own life?”
“Yes. He is. You don’t see them as your kids, so of course you don’t get it. Noah’s been through so much, since he was little. He’s now hurting, and for me, that’s unbearable. It’s like losing a piece of myself.”
Julian just stared at her, anger simmering in his eyes. Finally, he let go of her hand, his frustration obvious. “Fine. Do what you want.”
If she wanted to run herself ragged, if she wanted to hurt, so be it.
But Madeline didn’t back down. She caught his hand, her voice serious and low. “Listen to me.”
“The people who took Noah were dressed like Grayson staff. They brought him here, to your place, just to make it look like you’re involved.”
“Whoever did this knows how much Noah means to me. They’re using him to mess with us, to ruin what’s left between you and me. That means Noah’s in real danger right now. If anything happens to him here, you’ll be my first suspect, no matter what. Do you get that?”
She spoke so fast the words tumbled out, and Julian’s eyes grew even darker as he listened.
Madeline pressed on. “You were the only one who knew about him. You need to look into the people closest to you.”
“And think about it. They are hiding a child somewhere in this house where none of us can find him, which means they know the Grayson estate inside out.”
Julian’s brow was furrowed tight. “Alright.”
“Search the room.”
Lucy’s voice shook with rage. “Don’t any of you dare move. Julian, why do you believe her? She says the child is here, so it’s supposed to be true? Can’t you see she might be lying?”
Julian’s tone was steady, but there was no room for doubt. “She would never lie about her own child’s safety.”
Lucy pressed a hand to her forehead, her breathing quick and shallow, trying to keep herself together.
Helene hurried to support her. “Mrs. Grayson, are you alright?”
Lucy closed her eyes, struggling to calm down. “If you want to get into this room today, you’ll have to do it over my dead body.”
Madeline’s brow creased in worry.
But Helene looked almost pleased. She turned on Madeline, her voice loud and accusing. “Ms. Monroe, when is this going to end? Are you really trying to push Mrs. Grayson over the edge? Do you even know what this room means to her? You can’t just walk in here like it’s nothing. What if you break something? How can you make up for it?”
