"Let go."
Julian's face was unreadable, his eyes cold and empty.
"I won't. Julian, please, don't leave me. I can't live without you. I really can't. If you're gone, I won't survive. Julian, please..."
"End the engagement or go to jail. Pick one."
Helene froze, her heart pounding so hard it hurt. Still, she clung stubbornly to Julian's sleeve, her knuckles white.
Slowly, she looked up at him. Tears shimmered in her eyes, catching the light. Her lips trembled, so pale they looked almost blue. "Julian, do you really have to be so cruel to me?"
Julian just stared at her, his eyes colder than ever. "Helene, you stirred up trouble again and again. I’m done."
He shook her off, hard.
Her hands fell to her sides. Suddenly, she got it. Julian was just born cold. All the kindness he’d shown her had been out of guilt. Once the guilt was gone, so was his patience.
She used to think she was special to him, different from the other girls. Now she finally saw the truth. To Julian, she was just like everyone else.
But what could she do about it?
Even knowing all this, she still couldn’t let go. Everything about him pulled her in, no matter how much it hurt. Giving up on him wasn’t possible. And there was no way she would let Madeline have him back.
Julian belonged to her. Being his wife was her destiny.
She lifted her chin, glaring at Madeline with pure hatred.
Madeline stood there, calm and distant, not even looking back at her.
She knew Helene had the powerful Fortner family behind her, so getting rid of her wouldn’t be easy. Even if she went to prison, the Fortners would find a way to get her out.
Madeline had seen enough for one night. She gave Lucy a polite nod and turned to leave the Grayson house.
It was terrifying to think about. If Helene ever got upset with her, who knew what she might do? The thought gave Lucy chills.
Julian glanced at the door and headed outside.
Madeline had come with him that night, so now she had no choice but to call a cab.
"Let me drive you."
Madeline heard Julian behind her and turned to look at him. "Did you take care of it?" Her voice was calm, almost detached.
Julian nodded. "There are too many business ties between the Graysons and the Fortners. Helene’s situation ends here."
Madeline looked down, a tired, bittersweet smile on her lips. "I get it. You did enough for Noah. Thank you."
Julian frowned. "Noah is my son too. Of course I’d do this for him. You don’t have to thank me."
