Madeline leaned in close, tilting her head as her gaze landed on the side of his face. They were so close, Julian’s eyes went darker, and she saw his throat move as he swallowed.
She finished spreading the ointment and started to pull her hand back, but he caught her wrist before she could move away.
Her hand was soft, almost too soft, and he didn’t want to let go.
She tried to pull free, but his grip just tightened.
Madeline frowned, her eyes meeting his without warning. The way he looked at her made her heart stutter for a second, sending a ripple through her chest.
She pulled herself together. “I’m just trying to help you out. Stop being such a creep.”
Julian’s lips curled. “You already think I’m a creep. Isn’t it normal for me to act the part?”
He sounded so casual, like he didn’t care at all.
“And you’re actually proud of that?”
“Not exactly proud.”
Madeline lifted an eyebrow, not backing down from his stare.
“What do you see?” His voice was low, rough.
“That you want to sleep with me.” The words slipped out before she could stop them.
She knew that look in his eyes way too well. It was pure want.
Julian let out a quiet laugh. “So, are you going to let me?”
“You really are made for the word ‘creep.’ Maybe you should change your name to Julian the Creep.”
His arm tightened, and suddenly, he pulled her into his lap.
Madeline didn’t see it coming. One second she was standing, the next she was sitting right on him. The surprise had her flustered, and she pressed her hands against his chest to steady herself.
Julian looked up at her. “I don’t like that name.”
“I don’t care if you like it or not. Let me go.”
He just grinned. “If you already call me a creep, wouldn’t it be a waste not to act like one?”
“You—” She bit back the rest, furious.
The next moment, he reached up, pulled her down, and pressed his cool lips to hers.
Madeline’s heart skipped a beat.
He glanced at the doorway, eyes narrowing. “What is it?”
Madeline turned and finally noticed the bodyguard standing just inside. The man looked nervous, clearly picking up on the tension.
“Boss, the paternity test results are here.”
At those words, Madeline and Julian locked eyes for a long, silent second.
Julian’s hand clenched tighter, and something uncertain flickered in his gaze.
Madeline’s heart pounded loud in her chest.
After all these years, now that the truth was right in front of him, she couldn’t help feeling anxious.
She had no idea how he’d react when he found out the kids were his.
And she was scared of exactly what she’d always feared.
That he’d try to take them away.
His family would never just let their children live with someone else.
Madeline’s fists curled tighter as she watched the bodyguard hand Julian the envelope.
