Julian reached for the envelope. Right before he took it, his eyes flicked over to Madeline, holding her gaze. “You still believe what you said before? You really think the child is mine?”
“Yes.” Her voice was steady, not too loud, not too soft, but there was no doubt in it.
Julian nodded, his attention dropping to the envelope. He took it and flipped through the pages, one after another, until he reached the final result. He stared at the verdict, his face unreadable.
The silence hung in the room. Five long seconds ticked by.
Then Julian let out a cold snort, rubbing at his brow like he could chase away a headache.
What was he hoping for? Even after all this time, he still couldn’t let it go.
Madeline saw the bitter twist to his mouth, not a hint of happiness. Her brows drew tight. “What’s wrong?”
Julian set the report down on the table between them. “See for yourself.”
Madeline’s frown deepened. She walked over, picked up the paperwork, and flipped straight to the results. The words jumped out at her.
No parental relationship.
Her eyes went wide. That couldn’t be right.
She gripped the report. “This is fake. Someone must have messed with this.”
Julian’s voice was low and cool. “From the moment the samples were collected, through every hour at the lab, until I picked the report up, someone was watching the whole time. If you’re saying it was tampered with, who did it? Helene?”
Madeline could only think of Helene, but from the way Julian said it, Helene never had the chance.
So who else could it be? It wasn’t like the Grayson family’s bodyguards or the lab staff would do something like that.
Madeline’s mind spun, but she couldn’t come up with a single answer.
Julian got to his feet and looked down at her. “Why are you so sure the baby is mine? During that time, I didn’t even touch you.”
He’d barely been home back then. He and Madeline had hardly shared a room, let alone a bed, for months leading up to everything that happened. He knew he hadn’t been with her.
So if she was pregnant, it could only be from that one night.
That night. The man they’d never found.
Julian’s expression darkened even more.
Madeline pressed her hand to her forehead, her frustration about to boil over. “Because the night Helene drugged me, the person who slept with me was you.”
Julian’s brow creased. “And your proof?”
Madeline bit her lip, searching for words. “I just know. Every single thing I felt that night, it was you.”
“You’re that sure your feelings can’t be wrong?”
He remembered waking up with Helene next to him, and Madeline coming out of a different room. How did she explain that?
“Yes. I know I’m not wrong. I’m sure it was you.” Madeline’s voice shook, but her eyes never wavered.
She was absolutely certain, down to her bones.
Julian gave a cold, thin smile. “Feelings can be wrong. The evidence is right there in black and white.”
He looked up and saw the pain in Madeline’s eyes, pain that matched his own.
Her eyes were wide, unblinking, as if she was scared a single blink would make her tears fall.
She’d asked him this question in her mind a thousand times.
If the truth ever came out, Julian, how would you make up for what you owed to me and my children?
He’d forced her to take that medicine, never knowing it was his own children.
It was almost laughable.
When Julian didn’t answer, Madeline stared him down, refusing to back away. “What, nothing to say? I’m asking you, how would you make it right? If you found out you’d done me wrong, if you killed your own child, what then? Tell me, Julian.”
For the first time, Julian had no answer.
If what Madeline said was true, if he’d killed them all because he had gotten the wrong idea, then his own life wouldn’t be enough to pay for it.
“You can’t answer, can you?” Madeline’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Never thought I’d see the day you didn’t have all the answers…”
“I’d pay with my life.”
If he’d been wrong all those years ago…
“If all of it was my fault, I’d give you my life. You could do whatever you wanted with it.”
Madeline’s lips curled in a bitter smile. “Good. If that day ever comes, I want you, Julian, to feel every single bit of pain and hurt I went through.”
