Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 372

Christian’s eyes narrowed, sharp and dangerous. “Is that a warning?”

Madeline let a small smile slip onto her usually blank face. “Wouldn’t dream of it. Just giving you a heads-up.”

The car screeched to a sudden stop.

Christian wasn’t prepared. He lurched forward, nearly slamming into the back of the seat ahead.

Madeline steadied herself and quickly reached out to keep the old man from falling. Once he was seated again, Christian’s face twisted with annoyance and maybe a little embarrassment. He took a moment to calm himself, then glanced sideways at Madeline.

She had already withdrawn her hand.

Christian studied her, his eyes lingering on her face for a beat longer than usual, as if trying to figure her out. Madeline’s expression stayed cold, guarded.

“Why did you help me?” he asked.

“You helped me once, back at the Grayson place. I never really figured out what I did to make you hate me after that, but you did help me. Just returning the favor.”

The old man’s eyes grew darker, his voice dropping to a mumble. “It wasn’t your fault.”

He knew it wasn’t. He’d lost his son, and with nobody else to blame, all that anger just landed on the daughter of the real culprit.

Madeline heard him, even though he barely spoke above a whisper.

She lifted her head, just as the car door opened. A man got out and strode over, his steps fast and heavy. He reached the door, yanked it open, and a rush of cold air swept in as he grabbed Madeline’s arm, pulling her out of the car.

His eyes, dark and stormy, landed on Christian.

“Grandfather, you’ve crossed the line,” Julian said, voice steady and low, but the tension in the air was impossible to miss.

“No. He offered me a pretty tempting deal. Wanted me to take the kids and leave the Capital.”

“And?”

Madeline gave a soft, almost teasing smile. “I said yes.”

Julian’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles standing out white.

The tension in the car was thick enough to choke on.

Madeline could feel the car picking up speed.

Julian’s voice was cold, his eyes fixed on the road. “That’s what you want, isn’t it? You really can’t wait to get away from me?”
