“Seriously? That’s so awkward for Ms. Fortner.”
“What do you expect? She’s practically begging to marry him. Even if it’s humiliating, she just has to deal with it. Remember when she threatened to jump off a building? I heard it was all because he broke off the engagement. She said she’d end her life if he wouldn’t marry her. So dramatic. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t want her either.”
“What are you talking about?” A deep, commanding voice cut through the chatter.
The group of girls froze, turning to see Christian standing behind them. He leaned on his cane, hair completely silver, but his eyes were sharp and his presence intense.
Everyone went quiet, glancing nervously at each other.
“Mr. Grayson… we were only joking.”
“There’s a limit to what you should joke about. Don’t spread rumors that have no basis.”
Was Christian saying the rumor about Julian leaving the Capital was false?
The girls exchanged anxious looks.
“You’re right. We’re sorry.”
They apologized quickly. No one wanted to get lectured by Christian, not with all the guests around. After a few more mumbled apologies, they hurried away.
But that angry look stayed on Christian’s face. The truth was, Julian really wasn’t in the Capital. He’d made up his mind not to get engaged to Helene.
“Go find Julian and bring him back. This is getting out of hand,” Chrstian snapped at George.
George could feel sweat running down his back. He knew Julian too well. If even Christian couldn’t change his mind, what could a butler possibly do?
Courtney waved off the makeup artist and took Helene’s cold hand. “He’ll come. There’s still time before everything starts. Christian will make sure Julian gets here. All you need to do is get yourself ready and look perfect for your engagement.”
But Helene couldn’t calm down. She frowned, suddenly remembering Madeline’s birthday party. “Mom, has Madeline arrived yet?”
“I haven’t seen her, but the invitations went out. She’ll show up.”
Helene stared at her reflection, drew in a shaky breath, and asked, “Did you talk to the people at the entrance?”
“Yes. They know what to do. Guests for the engagement party and the birthday party can all come in.”
“Good.” Helene pressed her lips together, her jaw tight.
She would wait. If Madeline messed up her own event and got thrown out with her guests, that would be the talk of the night. With a disaster like that happening first, even if Julian didn’t show up, at least some of the attention would be off her. Maybe she wouldn’t be the only one everyone was laughing at.
