Madeline’s heart clenched so hard it hurt. The car kept racing forward, not slowing down at all. Her eyes went wide with panic. “Julian, hit the brakes!” she shouted.
If he didn’t stop, they’d go straight off the cliff. She didn’t even know how far the drop was, but if the car fell, trapped together, there was almost no way they’d survive.
Julian’s face looked terrible, full of tension and fear. The edge was less than twenty meters away. At this speed, there was no time left for anything, not even to turn the wheel.
Madeline stared ahead, paralyzed as the cliff rushed toward them. Julian still had his foot on the gas. Her scalp prickled with dread. Her face went pale, bloodless.
Suddenly, Julian reached over and unbuckled her seatbelt.
She looked at him, stunned. “You—” The car door swung open.
“Jump!” Julian yelled.
“What?” she gasped.
He looked at her, his eyes dark and intense. In that split second, Julian realized he truly loved her. He never wanted to let her go. But now, it felt like it was already too late.
He seemed to want to memorize her face forever. “Madeline, I’m sorry. I’ve hurt you for so long. Live. Please, live. I love you…”
Madeline’s panic hit its peak. “Julian!” she cried, reaching for him.
Julian shoved her out with all his strength.
She tumbled out of the car, rolling across the rocky ground. Her head slammed into a stone. Pain flared, sharp and blinding.
Behind her, a loud crash exploded through the night. The car had gone over.
Madeline barely noticed the pain in her body. She twisted around, desperate, just in time to see the car vanish into the darkness.
Tears fell faster. Madeline’s whole body shook. It hurt so much, like her heart had been ripped right out.
Why?
Why did it have to be this way?
Julian had done it to save her.
He saved her, and that’s why he didn’t have time to jump out himself.
“Julian!” Madeline’s scream tore through the night, so raw and full of pain that birds exploded from the trees overhead.
The wind howled around her. Under the pale, broken moonlight, Madeline was left alone, a shattered figure at the edge of the world.
