Headlights cut through the night, flooding the road behind her with harsh white light. Madeline spun around. Cars screeched to a stop. The doors opened and the men who’d been chasing her spilled out, coming back for more.
She watched as they fanned out, closing in. Madeline’s hands curled into fists. Her nails bit into her palms, sharp and deep, but she was too numb to feel any pain.
The leader scanned the area. No sign of their car. No sign of Julian. Then he spotted the tire tracks streaking straight toward the cliff’s edge, and the blood smeared across the ground.
A chill ran down his spine. He shot a look to one of his men, silent but clear. They needed to report to Helene. Now.
When Helene heard the news that Julian might have driven off the cliff, she went pale. Her legs buckled and she almost hit the floor.
She lurched forward, grabbing her subordinate by the collar. “What did you say? Say it again. Say it again!”
He dropped his head, voice barely more than a whisper. “We’ve got the report from the scene… Mr. Grayson’s car went over the edge. He might… he might…”
He didn’t finish. Helene’s eyes went wide. She dropped into her chair like her entire body had given out.
Julian was dead?
Dead.
“It’s over,” Helene muttered, her voice hollow and flat. “It’s all over… everything’s ruined.”
“Miss?”
Suddenly, something clicked in her mind. She shot to her feet, eyes wild and furious. “What about Madeline? Is Madeline dead? Is that bitch dead?”
Her outburst made everyone flinch.
“No, but we’ve got her surrounded.”
Helene’s expression twisted, her voice turning icy. “Good. Make her suffer. I want her to pay for what she did to Julian. Torture her until she begs for death.”
Hatred boiled inside her. Why did it have to turn out this way? Julian was dead. What was she supposed to do now? She hadn’t even been his wife for a single day and he was already dead. Why was Madeline still alive? It was supposed to be her instead!
Madeline’s eyes went wide. At some point, she’d grabbed onto a thick wooden stick. She gripped it tighter.
The men took in her injuries and didn’t even try to be careful. One of them stepped forward, ready to kick the stick from her hands.
He never got the chance. Madeline’s eyes hardened. She swung the stick as hard as she could, smashing it into his shin.
After a sickening thud, the man doubled over, grabbing his leg, howling in pain.
“Ah!” His scream tore through the night.
Everyone else froze, stunned. None of them had expected this woman—beaten and bruised—to still be so strong.
They were more careful now, but her battered body didn’t scare them enough to stop.
The leader snapped, “What are you standing around for? Scared of one injured woman? Get her!”
