Madeline’s breath caught. She stared at his hand, wrapped tight around the blade, blood trickling down and dripping onto her face.
Julian’s face was pale and tight, his forehead and cheek scraped raw, his clothes slashed and torn. He looked battered, but he stood there between her and danger, unflinching.
His lips pressed together, his dark eyes burning with anger as he glared at the man with the knife. The attacker, terrified, let go and jerked back. A second later, Julian used the same knife and slashed it across the man’s throat.
The leader of the group just stood there, stunned.
“Mr… Mr. Grayson…”
He was still alive?
Madeline stared at Julian, unable to believe it. It took her a while to find her voice. She whispered his name softly, “Julian?”
He dropped to his knees beside her, eyes wide as he took in her injuries. His hand came up, thumb brushing the blood from her lips. “Don’t worry. I’m taking you home.”
Madeline’s heart quivered. His touch was warm, grounding her, making her realize he was really here and unharmed.
“Boss, what do we do now?” one of the men asked, glancing nervously at their leader.
The leader looked sick.
With Julian here, there was no way they could keep going after Madeline.
Julian looked back at them, his gaze freezing cold.
He knew who was behind this.
The leader stammered, “Mr… Mr. Grayson, we… we…”
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out.
The man yelped and ducked, covering his head.
Julian spun just as a bullet, out of nowhere, slammed through Madeline’s shoulder. Her whole body shuddered and went limp. She toppled backward.
Miles grabbed one of the guards. “Follow that car. Get that plate, no matter what.”
“Yes, sir.”
With that, Miles didn’t waste another second. He ran for the path down to the water.
Please, Mr. Grayson and Mrs. Grayson have be alright.
The weather was getting worse. The cold wind whipped around them, heavy with the threat of rain, making everyone shiver.
Julian hit the freezing water and started searching, over and over, refusing to stop.
The waves crashed around him, but soon the bodyguards from the speedboats were jumping in too, diving and calling out.
Meanwhile, word of what happened reached Christian.
When he heard Julian’s car had gone off the cliff, his face went ghostly white. He gasped, his breath caught in his throat, and the old man collapsed right where he stood.
