George rushed forward and caught the old man just in time. “Sir, can you hear me? Sir?”
He started patting Christian’s chest, trying to help him breathe. “You have to stay with us, sir. Someone call the doctor. Hurry, get a doctor over here!”
Barely two minutes passed before news arrived, faster than any doctor could. “Sir, we just got the latest news. Mr. Grayson is safe. He didn’t fall into the sea.”
Christian drew in a shaky breath, still leaning on George for support. Finally, a bit of relief flickered in his tired eyes.
“Then… Is he back? Is he home yet?” His voice was rough, desperate. “Go get him. I want him here, now.”
Just as he finished, another bodyguard burst into the room, phone still in hand. “Sir, Mr. Grayson… something happened…”
Christian stepped forward, anxious. “What happened to him?”
“Ms. Monroe fell into the sea. Mr. Grayson jumped in after her.”
Whatever color had returned to Christian’s face vanished again, and George moved quickly to steady him.
Christian raised his hand, suddenly realizing something was wrong. He’d already told his people to pull back. How did Madeline fall into the sea?
“Tell me exactly what happened. Don’t leave anything out.”
“It was Ms. Fortner. Her men didn’t leave when they were supposed to. That’s why Ms. Monroe fell,” the bodyguard explained, staring at the floor, too scared to meet Christian’s eyes.
Christian looked furious, his hand clenching around his cane so tightly his knuckles stood out white. “Find her. Bring her to me. Now!”
“Yes, sir,” the bodyguard answered, and hurried off.
It wasn’t long before Helene was dragged into the room.
“Christian, I—”
She hadn’t wanted to come to the engagement party, as she didn’t even want this marriage. She had waited at home, but when no one returned, her anxiety grew until she couldn’t take it anymore and rushed over. She never expected to walk into chaos like this.
Grabbing Christian’s arm, Lucy pleaded, her voice shaking. “Dad, please, tell me. What happened to Julian?”
Christian’s head pounded. His reply was heavy. “Julian jumped into the sea after Madeline.”
Lucy clutched her chest, barely able to breathe. “The sea… Madeline… she fell…” Her eyes drifted to Helene, who was still struggling to get off the floor.
Why did Madeline fall? And her father had just slapped Helene. It had to be Helene’s fault.
It had to be her!
Fury and fear exploded inside Lucy. She didn’t care about appearances anymore. She threw herself at Helene, grabbing at her hair and clothes, shaking with anger.
“You bitch! It’s always you! If my son dies because of you, I’ll never forgive you! You’re evil! Do you hear me? Evil!”
