“Are you reopening the investigation?”
Julian’s eyes were dark, impossible to read. Madeline deserved the truth, and he needed to find out who was behind all the lies about her.
“Sir, your mother wants to see you in the chapel,” a servant said quietly.
Julian nodded, heading for the family’s small chapel. Inside, Lucy sat off to the side, carefully copying prayers onto delicate paper.
“Mom, why did you call me?” Julian asked, his voice cool and flat, no hint of emotion.
Lucy set down her pen and looked up, her expression gentle but firm. “Julian, your grandfather isn’t young anymore. Don’t keep arguing with him. His health can’t handle it.”
But Julian’s attention drifted to the handwritten prayers on her desk. “What are you writing?”
Lucy glanced at the unfinished prayer in front of her. “These are for Madeline. I’m praying for her safety.”
She let out a soft sigh. She used to resent Madeline, but now, looking back, she wondered what she’d really been angry about. She used to think Madeline had been cruel, that she’d caused Helene’s miscarriage, or that she’d left another man’s child for Julian to raise.
But now, it was all upside down. Madeline’s childen were Julian’s. Even the accusation that she’d hurt Helene’s baby seemed less certain than ever.
Lucy saw the pain her son was carrying, the sorrow in her grandchildren’s eyes. All she wanted now was for Madeline to come home safely. She believed in prayer, believed someone up there was listening.
“Do you think it works?” Julian asked quietly.
“It works if you believe.”
Julian had never believed in things like this. But now he took a blank sheet and a pen, asked someone to bring him a table, and knelt silently in front of the altar. Every word he wrote was a silent plea. If anyone was listening, he would give anything, anything at all, just to bring Madeline back safe.
…
The next few days, Julian barely rested. He crammed all his work into the early mornings and late evenings so he could spend his afternoons searching for Madeline.
Everyone said she was gone. Julian refused to accept it. He swore he would find her.
The whole Grayson family was searching, day and night, and soon the media caught wind of it. After the chaos of the engagement party, the story exploded online. Helene became the center of gossip, and the hotel where the party was held had to issue a public apology.
People crowded around in the lobby, watching the two of them fight. No one dared step in.
Normally, Julian would have overpowered James easily, but he was exhausted from days without sleep. Now, they were evenly matched.
Suddenly, as James swung at him, something clicked in Julian’s mind. He stopped fighting, taking a direct punch to the jaw. Miles rushed over, catching Julian just in time.
“Boss, are you alright?”
But Julian’s thoughts were somewhere else. “Look into Casey. Now.”
How could he have forgotten about Casey? Casey had always cared about Madeline. Yet since she’d gone missing, Casey hadn’t made a move, hadn’t said a word. That wasn’t like him at all. Usually, he’d be even more frantic than James.
There was no way he’d stay silent.
“No, I’ll do it myself.”
With a new sense of purpose, Julian strode out of the building, determined to follow this new lead.
