James stood there, frowning, still trying to process how Julian could just walk away in the middle of their fight like that.
Meanwhile, in Country Y...
In the quiet of a hidden courtyard, Madeline lay on a hospital bed, her skin ghostly pale, her body so still it almost seemed like she wasn’t breathing. Only the soft beeping of the high-tech medical equipment whispered that she was still hanging on.
Standing beside her was an old man, probably in his seventies. Casey hovered close, his eyes fixed on Madeline’s face, growing paler by the minute. The worry that had been simmering inside him finally boiled over.
He turned sharply to the old man, his voice tight. “Aren’t you supposed to be some legendary doctor? Why can’t you save her?”
The old man glanced at Casey, his gaze steady, and shook his head. “It’s not that I can’t save her. She was badly hurt and the treatment came too late. On top of that, she’s been poisoned. All I can do right now is keep her alive with medicine.”
Casey had heard this too many times over the past two days. It was driving him insane.
“If she’s poisoned, then cure her. Or are you telling me you can’t do it?”
“I can, but the poison is rare. I’m missing a few ingredients for the antidote, and they’re nearly impossible to find.”
Casey didn’t even hesitate. He slapped a piece of paper down on the table. “Write the names down.”
The old man just looked at him. “Even if I do, you probably won’t be able to find them. They’re as rare as treasure.”
Casey’s lips twisted into a determined smile. “As long as you tell me their names, I’ll get them. I don’t care what it takes.”
He would do anything, pay any price, if it meant saving Madeline.
The old man hesitated, then nodded and wrote down three names, handing the list to Casey.
“These are all extremely rare herbs. They have to be used together; not a single one can be missing. And you only have a few hours. If the poison isn’t cured by tonight, nothing can save her.”
Casey glanced at the list, then gave Madeline one last long look before turning to leave.
“Boss,” Cody called out, stopping him. “I think I’ve seen these herbs before.”
Casey turned, his eyes sharp. “Where?”
“They showed up at an auction last year. They’re so rare that the set sold for an insane price. If I remember right…”
Cody paused, his face growing more serious. “Kylian bought them.”
Across from Casey sat a man with a cold curl to his lips. He idly rubbed his pinky, a strip of leather wrapped around it, and lifted his brow with a hint of menace. “How much do you think you can offer?”
Casey’s eyes were dark, deep, cold as a frozen lake. When he looked up, the chill in his gaze was enough to make anyone uneasy. “How much do you want?”
Kylian shifted and rested his head against his temple, speaking at an unhurried, almost lazy pace. “Those ingredients are beyond rare. You don’t come looking for them unless you’re trying to save someone.”
“That’s none of your business.”
Kylian nodded easily. “Fair enough. I’m not a greedy man. And it’s not often you come to me for help, Casey. I wouldn’t turn you away.” His eyes flicked back to Casey, sharp beneath the casual tone. “I want this much. Whether you can pay it is up to you.”
He lifted his hand and casually held up two fingers.
Casey’s gaze tightened.
Behind him, Cody looked at Kylian and asked carefully, “Twenty million?”
Kylian smiled and slowly shook his head.
