Another half hour crawled by before Madeline realized she couldn’t just sit around and hope for the best. She had to get out of here. Deep down, she knew whoever had done all this wasn’t satisfied with just framing her. There was something bigger going on.
She clenched her teeth and shot a glance at the two men guarding the door. A heartbeat later, her entire demeanor shifted. She pitched forward, coughing up a mouthful of blood, her face twisting with pain. Then she crumpled to the floor and started convulsing, shaking like she couldn’t control her own body.
Outside, the guards jerked to attention at the sudden noise. Madeline writhed on the ground, gasping and twitching.
“What’s happening in there?” one of them muttered, frowning as he peered inside.
The other moved to open the door, but his partner caught his arm. “What are you doing?”
“She doesn’t look right.”
“Who cares? Leave her.”
The first guard hesitated, watching Madeline for a moment. She had gone limp, completely still. “We can’t let her die,” he whispered. “If something happens to her, we’re both dead meat.”
“What if she’s faking? Boss said she’s not your average woman.”
He wavered, staring at Madeline. “Her hands are tied. She’s not going to take us both out. Besides, that does not look like an act.”
He finally opened the door and stooped down to check on her. That was all Madeline needed. Her eyes snapped open. She slammed her knee into his leg, sending him sprawling. Before he could react, she yanked a knife from his belt and drove it straight into his shoulder.
Suddenly, a harsh voice rang out behind her. “Who’s there?”
Madeline froze, her spine stiffening as she held her breath.
“Turn around.”
From the sound of the footsteps, there were way too many people for her to handle. She could fight one or two. A crowd? No chance. She had to play this smart. She turned slowly, facing them.
But instead of attacking, the men just stared at her, like they were trying to figure out who she was. Madeline’s eyes narrowed. She remembered she looked a lot like someone else important to them. She let her face go cold, subtly hiding the knife behind her back. Then she snapped at them, “What are you staring at?”
