Helene stared at her phone, unable to believe the call had ended. She felt so empty she couldn’t even cry. It hit her all at once. She was the kind of daughter they could just toss aside whenever they felt like it.
She closed her eyes, letting the hopeless tears slip down her cheeks. Then she looked up, nervous, meeting Casey’s gaze. “What do you want me to say?”
“Everything you’ve done.”
“Everything I’ve done? Really?” She let out a bitter laugh. “What does it matter how much I’ve done? Is Madeline some kind of saint?”
Her lips trembled, anger making her voice shake. “Casey, Madeline isn’t as perfect as you think. You know that, don’t you?”
Casey just looked down at her, his mouth twisting in a cold smile. “Do I really need you to tell me if she’s innocent? I don’t want to believe anything that comes out of your mouth about her.”
Helene’s head shot up. Jealousy burned in her eyes. Why did everyone act like Madeline was so amazing? What was so special about her?
Tears kept falling, blurring her vision.
“Stop crying.” Casey’s voice was sharp, almost bored. “I can’t stand it when women cry, especially you. It’s just pathetic.”
The shame stung so badly, Helene almost couldn’t cry at all. She sucked in a shaky breath, her lips barely moving as she looked at him. “If I tell you every single thing that’s happened these past two days, will you let me go?”
Casey gave a noncommittal grunt and checked the time. “You have five minutes. Go.”
Helene bit her lip, nerves making her voice thin. “Yesterday, Julian threw me into a psych hospital. That night, a woman came to see me.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know her.”
“What did she look like?”
Helene shook her head. “I couldn’t see. She was covered up, like, head to toe. I swear.”
Casey shot a look at Cody. “Check it out.”
Casey let out a cold laugh. “So she wouldn’t kill you, the person who actually tried to hurt her, but she’d go after Lucy? Does that really make sense?”
Helene shook her head quickly. “No, she hit me...”
Casey just gave her a cool smile.
The way Helene told her story, it sounded convincing. She didn’t seem like she was making things up.
But even if Madeline really wanted to hurt someone, she wouldn’t be dumb enough to leave all the evidence behind. Not unless she wanted to get caught.
“I told you everything. Will you let me go now?”
“Let you go? Did I ever say that? I don’t remember.”
“You...” Helene clenched her jaw, her whole body shaking with anger. “Casey, you’re such a liar.”
