He watched the door close, his eyes growing darker. Unless they found the real mastermind, Madeline would be stuck with this blame. No one else believed there could be another person. The dagger only had her fingerprints. It was a trap with no way out.

In the bathroom, Madeline let the hot water wash over her, trying to clear her mind. The woman who looked just like her wanted to take her place, take her life, take everything she had. And apparently, Madeline was supposed to be so rich she could buy a country? She almost wanted to laugh. Since when was she that wealthy? Why would anyone go this far to become her?

Julian believed her, but Lucy… probably not. That hurt more than she wanted to admit.

When she finished her shower, Madeline realized she didn’t have a single thing to change into. Even her underwear was wet. With no other options, she wrapped herself up tight in a bathrobe and tiptoed out, hoping no one would see her.

She hesitated by the door, then opened it a crack. Julian was right there.

He looked tense, smoke curling from the last of his cigarette. Seeing her, he flicked it away and came over. Maybe it was the cigarettes, but his voice was lower, a little rough around the edges, and it sent a shiver down her spine.

Madeline shifted awkwardly. “I… don’t have any clothes. Could you ask someone to get me something to wear?”

“I already did,” Julian said.

She let out a breath. “Thank you.”

Julian reached for the door, but Madeline stepped in front of him. She was only wearing a bathrobe, and she felt completely exposed.

Julian gave a tired smile. “Let me in.”

“Can’t you go to another room?”

Madeline didn’t answer.

His voice dropped even lower, teasing but gentle. “I want to, believe me… but I can control myself. For now.”
