“What are you doing?” Madeline’s cheeks flamed red in an instant.
She wasn’t wearing anything under the bathrobe, and right now, all she felt was a wave of danger mixed with embarrassment that made her want to crawl out of her skin.
Julian scooped her up like she weighed nothing and set her gently onto the bed. Madeline’s heart hammered so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
One look at her face told Julian exactly what she was thinking. In her mind, he’d already been filed away as a total creep.
Well, if that’s how she saw him, he might as well play the part.
Instead of stepping back, Julian leaned in, arms bracing on either side of her, trapping her in.
Madeline looked frazzled. “You…”
“I just feel like being a little playful right now.”
She stared at him, wide-eyed. She’d never met anyone who could admit that so openly, like it was nothing.
She tried to throw a punch, but he caught her wrist easily and pinned it to the mattress, his body closing the distance.
Her fingers curled into a fist.
Someday, she swore, she’d take self-defense seriously. She’d get strong enough to wipe the smug look off Julian’s face, so he’d stop pushing her around like this. When that day came, she’d make him regret every time he’d left her helpless.
For now, all she could do was lie there, feeling the weight of him pressing down, her breath coming faster.
Julian took his time, clearly enjoying the flush spreading across her skin. He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her neck.
This time, she didn’t struggle like before. She just froze, letting him do whatever he wanted, like she’d given up resisting.
When he finally pulled back, he saw her eyes fixed on him, bright and sharp. She looked like she was plotting his demise.
Julian laughed. “What’s going on in that head of yours? Why aren’t you fighting back?”
“You can’t do anything besides drool all over me anyway.”
Julian froze for a second, then arched a brow, his dark eyes locked on hers. “Want me to prove I can do a lot more than that?”
Madeline shifted, trying to sit up, her expression daring. “I’m on my period.”
“Really?”
“Why would I lie about that?”
His gaze flickered, a sly smile tugging at his lips. “Let me check.”
Before she could react, his hand was already sneaking into her bathrobe.
He leaned in, his voice low and rough, his breath warm against her cheek. “Madeline, you are dangerously tempting.”
She glanced down, saw her bathrobe hanging open and her body pressed beneath him, his solid chest pinning her in place.
She wanted to pull away, but she couldn’t move an inch.
Their ragged breaths filled the space. Julian’s hand slid to her lower back and, without thinking, brushed over the scar there.
Madeline blinked, her scattered thoughts suddenly snapping into focus. She grabbed Julian’s hand, stopping him.
“Don’t…”
He felt her tense immediately. Julian paused, looking down at her, more serious now. “When did you get hurt? You’ve never told me about that.”
He had wanted to ask ever since he first noticed her scar.
His deep voice pulled her out of the haze. Madeline’s face stiffened, her guard snapping back into place.
She said nothing. Instead, she yanked her robe back up and pushed Julian away as she sat up.
Julian watched her mood shift in an instant, confusion flickering across his face. When Madeline tried to get off the bed, he wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her back into his embrace.
This time, the teasing was gone. His expression turned serious, concern shining in his eyes.
