The man standing next to the shop owner spotted Madeline right away.
He double-checked the photo he was holding. “Yeah, that’s her. No question.”
Celia didn’t hesitate. She shouted, “Madeline, run!”
Madeline froze for a split second, her whole body jolting. The warning barely had time to register before the men started charging at her. She spun on her heel and took off.
“Hey...” The man shouted after her, clearly annoyed at how fast she was. “Stop!”
They’d spent nearly two days and nights searching for her. There was no way they could let Madeline slip through their fingers again.
The man snapped into action, calling out orders for his guys to split up and search the area.
“Hurry. We have to bring her back.”
“Yes, sir.”
Celia watched, panic written all over her face. Then, from down the street, another group appeared and started chasing after the first group. They were the bodyguards Julian had assigned to watch over Madeline.
Julian had told them to keep their distance, to protect Madeline without intruding on her life. But the second they saw someone chasing her, they sprang into action.
Madeline could hardly believe this was happening. She’d picked the most out-of-the-way seaside town she could find. How had they managed to track her down?
She had no idea who these people were. Maybe they were the ones Casey had warned her about. There was no time to figure it out. She just had to run.
The bodyguard squared his shoulders, blocking the man’s path. “Who are you? She belongs with us. What are you after?”
Seeing Madeline getting farther away, the man scowled and tried to shove past, but the bodyguard blocked him again. The two of them started wrestling right there in the street.
Madeline had no idea where she was anymore. The narrow, twisting paths all looked the same. She just kept darting down any alley that seemed open.
But there were too many people after her. She could hear footsteps all around, and before long, she found herself surrounded.
Gasping for breath, Madeline pressed herself against a wall and bent over, clutching her knees. “Who... who are you people?”
Her pursuers were just as out of breath. The guy in charge stepped forward. “Ms. Monroe, the Elder wants you to come home with us.”
