What elder? What do you mean by home?
Madeline stared at them, totally confused.
“I don’t get it. Can you just explain what’s going on?”
When she realized they weren’t about to attack her, she let out a shaky breath, leaning against the wall to steady herself.
“You’ll understand everything once you come with us. Some things aren’t certain yet, so we can’t say too much. All you need to know is we’re not here to hurt you.”
Madeline caught her breath and frowned. “I don’t even know who you are. You say you’re not bad people, but why would I just believe that? What if I go with you and end up somewhere I can’t get out of? I don’t even know if anyone would help me.”
She kept her guard up. After all, you couldn’t tell a good person from a bad one just by looking at their face.
She wasn’t about to take what they said at face value.
The man in front hesitated, clearly understanding why she was suspicious. No one in their right mind would trust a bunch of strangers for no reason.
After a moment, he said, “We’re from the Ballard family in the capital. The Elder sent us. Your mother, Shelly, is our matriarch. That makes you the Ballard family’s young miss.”
“The Ballard family? My mom…” Madeline repeated, frowning.
Honestly, she’d never even heard of this family. Judging by how coordinated they were, and the fact they had people called ‘Elder,’ they definitely weren’t some small-time group.
Now they were saying she was their young miss, and her mom’s name was Shelly?
Madeline’s frown deepened. “Are you sure you have the right person?”
Her mother’s name was Susan. Not Shelly.
“You look just like her. There’s no way we’re wrong.”
“Miss, we’ve finally found you,” he said.
Judging by how everyone treated him, Madeline figured this must be the Elder they’d been talking about.
She nodded politely. “Hello.”
The Elder stared at her, his excitement so raw it brought tears to his eyes. Madeline didn’t know what to do with herself.
“Miss, please come with me. The Ballard family is waiting for you.”
He gestured for her to follow.
Madeline blinked and took a breath. “Wait, I’ll go with you, but I need to bring a couple of bodyguards. I also have to let my friend know where I’m going, or she’ll be worried.”
