Madeline wanted someone to know exactly where she was going. If something happened to her, at least people would know where to start looking. After everything she’d been through, caution came naturally to her.
The elder paused, looking at her with a bit of regret in his eyes. “I’m sorry, Miss, but that’s non-negotiable. We can send someone to let your friend know you’re safe, though.”
He tried to reassure her. “You don’t have to worry about your safety. We will take care of you.”
Madeline looked around at the people surrounding her. “I want to tell my friend myself.”
He could tell she didn’t trust them completely, which made sense. After a moment, he nodded. “Alright.”
They brought over Celia. She looked anxious, grabbing Madeline’s hand with both of hers. “Madeline, what is going on?”
“I’m fine, really. They’re not here to hurt me. If Julian comes looking for me, please tell him I’ve gone to the Ballard family in the capital. Tell him not to worry about me.”
Celia looked like she was barely holding it together, but she listened and nodded hard. “I’ve got it. I promise.”
“Thank you, Celia.”
Madeline tried to calm her down a little more. The Ballard family’s people waited quietly, giving her space. Even when Celine left, she kept glancing back, clearly still worried.
Madeline turned to the elder. “How should I address you?”
He replied, “You can call me Maxwell.”
“Alright, Maxwell. Let’s go.”
Maxwell made a polite gesture, inviting her to move forward.
Madeline stepped out and took in the sight before her. The grounds were massive and breathtaking. She had been right—the Ballard family was every bit as powerful as the Graysons.
“Miss, this way please,” Maxwell said, still just as respectful as before.
Madeline followed them inside. There were guards stationed everywhere, every few steps. At the main entrance, two tall guards pushed open the heavy double doors for them.
Inside, it wasn’t the gold and marble she’d expected. Instead, the place was all dark wood and elegant, old-fashioned details. Two carved chairs stood side by side at the front of the hall, with matching wooden chairs lining the walls. The whole place had a quiet, serious energy.
“Miss, please rest here for a while. I’m not the only elder in the Ballard family. The other two will return soon. When they arrive, we’ll have a few questions for you.”
Madeline nodded. “Can I meet your matriarch first?”
She barely finished speaking before a man hurried in and whispered something to Maxwell. His expression changed immediately. “How can that be?”
