Maxwell looked at the two girls in front of him, his voice firm. “The family head has only one daughter. One of you has changed her appearance with cosmetic surgery. We’ve brought in a plastic surgeon to check. You both agree to this, right?”
Madeline just nodded, calm as ever.
Claire didn’t say a word.
Madeline glanced at Claire, her eyes narrowing. She could tell Claire came ready for this.
Maxwell signaled, and a professional plastic surgeon stepped forward.
“Excuse me, ladies.”
He slipped on his gloves and started examining Madeline and Claire, his hands gentle but thorough as he checked every feature.
After a few moments, the doctor frowned.
Maxwell jumped in. “What’s the verdict?”
The doctor turned to Claire. “This one has had plastic surgery.”
Claire’s face froze for a second, then she let out a bitter little smile and nodded. “Yes, I have.”
The elders all stared at her. Claire pressed her lips together, looking like she’d rather be anywhere else than talking about her past.
Maxwell turned to Madeline. “And what about her?”
The doctor finished his check and shook his head. “No surgical traces on her face.”
Maxwell’s face changed. One woman had surgery, the other didn’t. The truth was right there, plain as day.
The pendant could be stolen. People could be bribed. But no one could hide having their face altered.
Madeline watched her, a cold smirk hidden behind her calm expression.
Now it was the Monroe family’s turn to step in.
Grandma Monroe was the first to speak. She squeezed Claire’s hand, her eyes full of grief. “It’s true. Madeline’s accident was awful. We almost lost her.”
Madeline watched Grandma Monroe’s dramatic display, scoffing silently. If there was an Oscar for acting, she’d have won it by now.
Maxwell traded looks with the other elders. None of them looked convinced.
He said, “We’ll check your story. But what we know for sure is that you’ve had surgery and this young lady hasn’t. She’s the one we’ve been looking for.”
He was about to say more when Claire interrupted him. “Maxwell, it’s not impossible for two people to look exactly alike, even if they’re not related. How can you be so sure she’s the real Madeline just because of that?”
