Maxwell pressed his lips together and frowned. “What you’re talking about could happen, but the odds are unbelievably low. It’s almost impossible.”
“But you said almost, not completely impossible,” Claire shot back, her voice rising.
“This is about both of our futures. If you make a decision based on that tiny chance and end up mixing us up, can you really take responsibility for the consequences?” Claire’s eyes blazed as she demanded an answer.
The three elders fell silent. They all understood how serious this was, and none of them dared to be careless.
Madeline finally spoke up, her voice calm but sharp. “Sure, what you’re saying could happen. But if we have to choose between believing that incredibly rare possibility or believing you’re lying, I think everyone here would pick the second option.”
Out of all the people in the world, it was technically possible for two unrelated people to look exactly alike. But the chance was so tiny, it was almost impossible.
Claire didn’t hesitate. “If you think I’m lying, go ahead and check. I have nothing to hide.”
“Oh, so you’re using the accident that disfigured you as an excuse for plastic surgery? What exactly are we supposed to investigate? Whether the accident really happened? If you’re so confident about it, then the car accident and the surgeries must be true. But who can prove you didn’t just use the accident as a chance to get your face changed to look like mine?”
Claire clenched her jaw, letting out a cold little laugh. “You really think that? Do you have any evidence at all?”
“No. I’m just guessing.”
“Guessing?” Claire scoffed. “You’re actually standing here making accusations based on a guess? Isn’t that ridiculous?”
“You’re using probabilities to make your case. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to use my instincts?” Madeline fired back, her voice icy.
Claire went quiet, glaring at Madeline but saying nothing more.
Maxwell looked even more frustrated. “Alright, enough. Let’s stop arguing.”
Maxwell called for the family doctor, who quickly came in and collected blood samples from all three of them.
Just as the doctor was about to leave, Maxwell said, “Harry, please go with him to the hospital and make sure you bring the results back yourself.”
He wanted Harry to watch over the whole process at the hospital, making sure nothing went wrong and nobody could mess with the results.
Harry agreed right away. “Of course.”
“Thank you,” Maxwell said quietly.
Claire watched all this, a cold smile flickering at the corners of her lips. The Ballard family was cautious to the extreme. There was no way anyone could interfere.
