“Go call Noah downstairs,” Julian said, his voice low and heavy.

Helene and Marian exchanged a quick, knowing look.

Helene walked over to Julian and let out a dramatic sigh. “It’s alright, Julian. I don’t blame him. He’s just a kid. It’s normal for him to not understand things. When he comes down, please be gentle with him. Just talk to him nicely, okay?”

Oliver strolled slowly toward the stairs and spotted Helene already putting on her act.

He wasn’t about to let her win this round.

He shuffled over to Julian, eyes flicking to Helene. Without waiting for anyone to speak, he ducked behind Julian, looking scared.

With his thin shirt and that timid posture, he looked absolutely pitiful.

Helene narrowed her eyes, suspicious. What was this little troublemaker up to now?

Julian felt something tighten in his chest. “Noah, come here.”

Oliver glanced up at him, cautious. “Daddy… I’m scared…”

His voice shook, and his small body trembled like he’d just seen something terrifying.

Julian frowned, thinking Oliver was just scared of being scolded. “Do you know you did something wrong?”

Oliver nodded hard. “Yeah, I’m sorry.”

Helene’s lips curled up in satisfaction.

Her methods seemed to be working. The boy was already scared of her.

Julian studied Oliver’s sad little face and felt his heart soften. His voice gentled. “What exactly did you do?”

Oliver hung his head. “I wasn’t a good boy. I didn’t know any better. I’m just a child. I should let Aunt Helene have everything she wants.”

Helene froze.

“In this house, I’m just an outsider. Whatever Aunt Helene wants, I shouldn’t fight her for it. Daddy, I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.”

The more Oliver spoke, the sadder he sounded. By the end, his voice was trembling like he was about to cry.

Helene stood there, completely stunned.

What was this kid even talking about?

She hurried forward to grab him, but Julian moved faster, pulling Oliver in front of him. His voice was cold. “Who taught you to say that?”

Oliver kept his head down. “No one taught me. Daddy, please don’t blame Aunt Helene. She didn’t tell me any of this.”

Helene stood frozen, feeling like she’d just been slapped by a five-year-old.

“No, that’s not what happened…” Helene panicked, crouching down in front of Oliver.

Oliver shrank back, looking even more scared.

“It’s me, it’s all my fault. Aunt Helene told me not to talk, so I shouldn’t talk. Daddy, don’t be mad at her. She said I’m just a bastard. She said it’s for my own good, so I understand my place. Daddy, I can’t stand so close to you, or Aunt Helene will get mad again.”

The maids rushed forward to help.

Oliver kept slipping away from them, crying loudly.

He was too quick. No one could catch him.

The living room was suddenly a mess of chaos and noise.

Julian closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then stood up. When Oliver tried to duck under another table, Julian grabbed him and scooped him up in his arms.

The little boy was crying his heart out, face wet with tears and snot, pressing his face into Julian’s chest, wiping everything on his expensive suit.

Julian patted his back gently. “Shhh. I’m here. No one will ever hurt you.”

But Oliver only cried harder, squirming in Julian’s arms. “I want to leave. No one wants me. I’m just a bastard. I shouldn’t bother you.”

Julian hugged him tighter, his voice steady and patient. “You’re my son. You’re not a bastard. This is your home, always.”

“Really? I can really stay here? What if Aunt Helene gets mad again?” Oliver asked, sneaking a look at Helene.

Helene, desperate, went for her last resort. Tears streamed down her face. “Noah, I know you can’t stand me, but you can’t just accuse me like this. I never said those things.”

She looked straight at Julian. “Please, believe me. I could never be that cruel…”
