Madeline rested her chin in her palm, watching Julian with a gentle, almost teasing smile. “That’s my quote, if you have no objections.”
She was obviously trying to put him on the spot. Madeline didn’t believe for a second that Julian would actually agree.
Off to the side, Miles just shook his head quietly.
Honestly, Mr. Grayson, you kind of brought this on yourself. She used to come over, practically begging to treat you for free, and you turned her away. Now look at you—paying hundreds of millions for a single session.
He really wanted to ask his boss if he just had too much money lying around and needed to find ways to spend it.
Julian’s eyes were fixed on Madeline, dark and unblinking.
She arched an eyebrow at him, silently hoping he’d just turn her down, just say no, so she could come to his place and treat him herself...
Julian let out a low, cold laugh. “Alright.”
Wait, what?
Madeline’s composure slipped. She hadn’t expected that at all.
He actually agreed?
This wasn’t something that could be solved in one or two visits. He’d need ongoing care, a ton of her time. If she really charged him by the session, the price would skyrocket.
Miles looked just as shocked. For once, his usually serious face showed total disbelief.
Was Mr. Grayson for real? Was this some kind of joke?
One of them had the nerve to ask, and the other just went along with it. Were they playing some weird game?
Madeline’s heart stuttered. The way he watched her sent a chill down her spine, but she forced herself to stay calm, meeting his gaze with a cold little smile.
“You wouldn’t let me treat you at your place, and now you want to come here? So you never really cared about the treatment. You just didn’t want me near the Grayson family. Julian, I haven’t even started asking what you’re hiding, and now you’re accusing me?”
She took a sip of water, pretending to be relaxed as she pushed down her nerves.
Julian stared at her, like he was searching for something in her eyes.
Madeline met his gaze, equally cool, refusing to back down.
Just then, Miles’s phone rang, snapping the tension in the room. He quickly stepped aside to answer it.
His face turned grim almost instantly. He hurried back to Julian and leaned in. “Mr. Grayson, something’s happened. Noah had a fever last night and was rushed to the hospital this morning. Ms. Fortner and your mother were in a car accident last night. Ms. Fortner has minor injuries, but your mother has a mild concussion. They’re all at the hospital right now.”
