The moment Wade ordered his men out of the van to block Amber's path, she realized her mistake. The people she had been trying to shake during her walk weren't Sharif's private investigators—they were the enforcers working for Joanne's father.

Amber recognized Wade. In her past life, at her engagement party with Lucian, Wade had been one of the men who delivered Joanne's suicide note.

She had miscalculated. The silver van she spotted near the construction site wasn't sent by Sharif after all.

She had only intended to blur her tracks, sending a message to the PI to tell Sharif that she knew he was watching her, but that he needed to back off because she wasn't hiding any mysterious mastermind.

She was the mastermind.

"Well, aren't you a playful one, little girl? Made us follow you all this way. Since you like playing so much, why don't you come somewhere quiet with us? We'll show you a real good time."

Wade licked his lips, his eyes roving over Amber with undisguised filth.

The four thugs cracked their knuckles, looking like they had been waiting for this all day.

Vance, who a second ago had been thrilled to share ice cream with Amber, widened his eyes. "Who the hell are you?"

He immediately shoved Amber behind him.

Wade sneered, casually tapping a baseball bat against his palm. "None of your business, kid. Step aside if you don't want to get hurt." Joanne was right—this girl was slippery.

Vance glared, about to announce that he wasn't the type to walk away, when Amber suddenly shouted, "Vance, stay out of this!"

Vance blinked. Before he could react, something heavy hit his chest. Amber had shoved her backpack into his arms. "Run! I'll see you at school!"

With that, Amber violently hurled her ice cream directly into the face of the thug blocking her path and sprinted away.

"Amber!" Vance yelled in shock.

Wade was equally stunned. "Damn it, she's like a greased pig! Look, kid, do what she says. Stay out of it and run back to class."

Vance tried to argue, but Wade casually signaled one of his men, who stepped up and tased him, instantly dropping him to the pavement. Vance's father had no dealings with their boss, so Wade wasn't above kidnapping the boy if he became a nuisance.

Vance collapsed. Someone passing by would eventually wake him up.

"Grab her!"

Amber ran toward the crowded streets like her life depended on it. But this stretch of the road was mostly traffic, with very few pedestrians. It was an undeveloped industrial zone. The only silver lining was that she had decided to walk—if she hadn't known the geography from her past life, she would have been cornered instantly.

Damn it!

Joanne actually hired thugs to destroy her!

As Amber sprinted, she fumbled for her phone to call 911. But distant water can't put out a nearby fire. Even if she connected, the cops wouldn't arrive for at least ten minutes, and Wade would have dragged her into a van long before then.
