Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 118

Arthur felt like he'd been struck by lightning.

Call it quits. The words felt like invisible knives plunging straight into his guts.

He had met Grace when he was thirty-three. From the second he saw her, he promised himself he would treat this woman like a queen. He raised her son, he helped run her business, and he catered to her every whim—all just so they could build a beautiful life together.

Twelve years had passed. He wasn't young anymore, and he didn't have the wild dreams he used to. He just wanted to wait until the kids went off to college so they could finally settle down and live in peace.

He had made his peace with it. If she wasn't ready to get married, fine. They had survived twelve years; what was another twelve?

But now she was telling him to call it quits?!

What was there to quit?! Her words were tearing his heart to shreds.

How could she throw away twelve years so casually?

"Grace..." Arthur wanted to scream that he had worked like a dog for her for over a decade, and this was how she repaid him? Actually, they couldn't even formally "call it quits." They weren't legally married. He was practically a glorified volunteer.

His heart throbbed with excruciating pain. He wanted to cuss her out, but as a man, he forced himself to swallow the bitterness.

Seeing how deeply she had wounded him, Grace secretly reveled in her triumph. She knew he couldn't let her go. People always crave what they can't have. She was glad she had been smart enough to only give him little breadcrumbs of affection without ever making a real commitment. If she had, he'd be throwing it in her face right now.

Women had to be smart, or they'd lose everything!

She had trained him for twelve years; there was no way he was escaping now.

"Arthur, I know it hurts, but it hurts me more. We don't have a choice. We're done. You won't have to worry about Amber's feelings, and I won't have to worry about Lucian. We go our separate ways. It's for the best."

Arthur snapped. "Best for who?! How is this good?! We had a perfectly good life, why do you constantly have to tear it apart?!"

"Grace, let go of the door. Let me in so we can talk. Me and Xanthe... I mean, there is absolutely nothing going on between me and Xanthe. You misunderstood."

"Loretta isn't back yet, so I'm just helping out. Once she's back, I'm out of the picture. Grace... let's go get our marriage license right now. The courthouse is still open. Grab your ID and let's go."
