"Amber..."
"Did Grace drag him away?"
Amber was completely unsurprised. Lucian's mother was a master at playing the victim. In her past life, her dad had caught Grace going on online dates and even meeting up with other men multiple times. But every time, Grace would just cry, twist the story, and guilt-trip him by saying she was just testing the waters because she was getting old and didn't think anyone would want her anyway. Her dad always caved.
That was exactly why Xanthe had eventually grown so disillusioned and returned to the Sutton household.
"She didn't drag him away..." Xanthe wanted to defend Arthur. She grabbed Amber's hands gently. "Don't be mad at your dad. He actually stood his ground today. I'm not lying. When we rode past the diner, he drove straight past without even looking at her."
"It's my fault. I didn't want to keep being a burden, so I asked him to teach me how to ride the scooter. Grace came over with some beef and saw us. She got furious, and he went to explain things so she wouldn't get the wrong idea."
Amber let out a dry laugh. She knew it.
Suddenly, the rich aroma of stewed meat hit her nose, and her eyes lit up. "Are we having pot roast tonight?"
It was Xanthe's signature dish. In her past life, after Amber was discharged from the hospital, it was Xanthe's cooking that had nursed her back to health.
"Yeah, the beef she threw at him. I figured the meat was fine, and I was cooking anyway, so I made it. Sit down, Amber, I'll whip up a few more dishes. Give your dad a call and tell him to come eat. I already washed the containers. I'll buy tomorrow's ingredients in the morning, and after dinner, I'll keep practicing on the scooter. I rode it a little bit earlier, and it's actually pretty easy."
Amber smiled. "Sounds perfect. But take the gift first. You go finish cooking, and I'll install some apps for you. And don't bother calling my dad. He won't be back anytime soon. Let's just leave him be so he doesn't throw a fit."
Xanthe was shocked. "Amber, he just went to..."
"Don't make excuses for him. He won't learn until he hits a brick wall. It's fine, we have plenty of time. Just focus on yourself and let fate handle the rest. Don't stress about them."
Xanthe honestly didn't know how to handle the drama anyway. She wasn't wired to manipulate people with sweet words like Grace.
She was just a straightforward, honest woman. If she tried to tell Arthur he deserved better, Grace would instantly twist it and accuse her of trying to steal him.
To keep Xanthe out of the crossfire, Amber told her to just focus on herself while Amber handled the rest behind the scenes.
Xanthe genuinely adored Amber. If only I had a daughter like her.
Unfortunately, she knew she'd never have children of her own in this lifetime.
Amber set up the phone while Xanthe worked in the kitchen.
Amber had gotten the phones practically for free; she just showed her face at the electronics plaza, and Sharif's tab covered it.
Vance had been thrilled at the chance to buy her something, even calling his dad to ask for cash. But when they walked into the store, the same employee who had helped Amber buy the laptop immediately recognized her and rushed over to assist.
Amber didn't waste time. She had one simple request: "Two phones. One top-of-the-line, and one basic model."
The top-tier one was for her, and the basic one was for Xanthe.
